The dark side
Jan 20 2009, 4:04 PM EST
We all have a dark side that we keep safely hidden away from view (much like Dex). The dark cannot exist without the light (no shadows without it) so they go together. Since the "light" helps us to see and differentiate differences, what does the "darkness" provide in terms of utility? |

Although I am reticent to answer this question because I am not even close to being as schooled as you are, I will put in my two cents. I think the darkness gives us the ability to survive in a constantly evolving, progressively more violent, world. I believe it is primeval in nature and is what allowed us to evolve in the first place. Sometimes I ponder the fact that maybe sociopathic personalities are in themselves an evolution of man. We have the ability to save or destroy our own planet. Although I think that we want to save it, the darkness in us will fight anything that tries to take away what we believe is ours, even though they are of the same species as us. In a sense I think it all boils down to survival of the fittest. Without the darkness, would we still be able to survive? |

Your reticence IS your dark side trying to obscure the light that you can shed on this reality!C'mon everyone. WE can really get a handle on this. Dexter is not just an awesome entertainment, it is a portal to revealing those parts of our nature that want to operate with impunity and without our conscious knowledge. Sounds difficult to deal with but all we need to do is speak to the issue and shed light where it can do the most good. Lucifer was thrown into the pit? Lucifer=lux=light was shed into the darkest recesses of ourselves. The only danger is that we let that glimmer fade rather than shining brightly into the abyss to show us the way. Your comment was primo and once we manage to convert that "want" into our intention through our will, we will get our chance. |

Like a monitor or TV screen, darkness is required to provide definition as well as contrast. It also serves as an opposite reference (brilliance) to totally white.Definition is what Dex does. He defines the target as deserving of his fate and then applies contrast to his situation to enable him to focus clearly on how to undertake the endeavor. The code is all about the suitable and appropriate application of Dex's dark "component" to the mix of his "light" presence in society. In this way he can define his purpose and contrast himself so as to differentiate his acts from those of any other SK. |

"maybe sociopathic personalities are in themselves an evolution of man. We have the ability to save or destroy our own planet. . Without the darkness, would we still be able to survive?"Right you are and we can start with our own selves and get to the planet later....lol Dex is unperturbable (he has no emotions relative to social conscience) and this is what tipped off Lundy and Doakes to his "unusual" demeanor. Like Dex will have to do (eventually) we too must integrate both of our "sides" so that the synergy created where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole allows us to transcend this messy but beautiful place. |

DEx will have a child of his own soon. How will this affect his "dark passenger" and will the child be "different" in some way to elicit a reaction from Dex?
