Quotes:
• [re: Dex & Deb's strained relationship] “She doesn’t know why Harry needs to go off on these trips alone with Dex, and you see how conflicted Dex is over it because it has, and rightly so, made Deb insecure. And Dexter, as an adult, is very aware of that and tries to compensate. He carries an extra burden with knowing that Harry saving him caused Deb to have less of a father.”

• "The days of 'Magnum, P.I.' are gone. Part of what we love in our antiheroes now is that shadow side, that part of what we love in ourselves because we all have that shadow."

• "We don't want him obviously killing somebody who doesn't deserve it out of impulse or something. But we have explored the notion of his having killed someone without properly vetting that person and perhaps making a mistake."
Quotes (cont.):

• Early on in the pilot, he (Dexter) looked at the doughnut box and said, 'Empty, just like me.' I personally, honestly, didn't think that was true. I think his emotional capacity is like that French coffee press that you push down. And the little bubbles (that) come up? I think those little bubbles are bubbles of emotion coming up out of him. Emotions that he doesn't fully have a handle on, but emotions that scratch at him a little bit."

• "Pretty quickly in the beginning of the (new) season, he's going to explore who he is. He learns things about his past that heretofore had not been apparent to him as he more deeply excavates what he thought was the soil beneath him and learns about his father and his past and that key relationships in his life and what he thought was true perhaps wasn't so true. Combine with that an emerging sense of his own humanity. But you can't take him all the way there because then we don't have a show anymore. But the light will start shining in a little more on him."

Please, please, enough on the nose dialogue. If I hear another plot point reiterated in plain language, well, I'll still keep watching.

Also, in Episode 4(or 5?)...I know Dex was in a bad mood because he hadn't killed in a while, but did he really have to be mean to Rita in the 'No' scene? It was inconsistent, he knows better. The preceding scene, where he asked her and the kids to marry him, was transcendent and quite convincing. He doesn't feel, but he knows how not to be rude. If he was going to have problems being rude in his normal life, it should have been written into the first two seasons.

It hurt to watch, it inflicted pain on the viewer, but without enough justification. Rita is the everyman, she is the audience, we are rooting for her more than for Dexter or anyone else. When and how she gets hurt is going to be the true tragedy, the real art, of the rest of the show, no matter what happens with Miguel or Deb.

So when Dexter hurts her feelings, it shouldn't be cheap or his character will thin out.
That's how, in the end, I'm going to decide if this show is pulp or lit.
Otherwise, I'd like to tell the crew 'Bravo' for seasons 1 and 2, I was immensely entertained.

wendilea50 Major error in N.A. language 1 Sep 28 2008, 7:35 AM EDT by BTDT

Minor error, but major if you know anything about Narcotic Anonymous. No self respecting recovering addict in NA would ever use the word "sober" They would say "clean" . To addicts, sober is an AA word/llanguage. The NA police would be apalled if they heard of such disreguard for correct language.

Morgaine Who does the wardrobe? 1 Nov 22 2007, 4:12 AM EST by Morgaine

Dexter's "kill" outfit in "Morning Comes" was perfect on him - Do they deliberately dress him better when he's hunting than they do for every day? I also noticed that he's wearing more tight shirts since Lila is in the picture.

Lila's clothes are great, too. Lundy's off hours outfit was inspired - Yellow! That shows a completely different side to him, and made him look more appropriate for Deb.(Though it isn't hard to make Keith Carradine look good...)

Whoever does the wardrobe is doing a great job.
