EPISODE 3.1: "Our Father"

S03E01, "Our Father"

Episode summary:
For Dexter, life seems to be going well. His relationship with Rita and her kids is back on track. He’s no longer under scrutiny at his day job as a blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide. And his night job as a serial killer is operating on all cylinders. So when he sets his sights on Freebo, a dope dealer and killer, it looks to be just another night of Dexter’s dark justice. But things don’t go as planned and Dexter must find a way to extract himself from a pair of problems that he created, both in his home and night life. Dexter also finds himself inexorably drawn to Miguel Prado, an Assistant District Attorney, who has a very personal reason to bring Freebo to justice. Meanwhile, Debra is put in a difficult situation when someone from Internal Affairs wants her to inform on her new partner, Quinn.

Dexter's Open Case Files
Prado FoundDescription of crime: The younger brother of Miami's ADA Miguel Prado is found slain in the home of notorious drug dealer "Freebo".

Victim(s):Oscar Prado

Assigned officer(s):Lt. La Guerta, Det. Sgt. Battista, and Det. Morgan (later removed from the case)

Crime scene: The living room is in obvious disarray. Scuff marks on the linoleum and a crumpled throw rug suggest a valiant struggle took place. A large blood stain marks the area where the victim was found. There was also Dexter's temporary crown that he lost during the struggle. No one else saw it because Dexter promptly collected it off the floor upon arriving to the crime scene.

Suspect(s):Fred Bowman aka "Freebo"

Clue(s):

Blood evidence suggests...A single, fatal stab wound to the chest after a "heroic" struggle ended between the victim and assailant. The killer was either lucky, or had superior knife handling skills (the aorta had been cleanly severed in one motion.)

Square CutDescription of crime: A young woman is found dead on the rocks near the water, face down wearing a denim dress and a bathing suit. Her upper right shoulder is missing a chunk of flesh unknown to have been removed pre- or post-mortem.

Victim(s): Teagan, a drug addict living with "Freebo" (a detail known only to Dexter at the time the body was discovered)

Assigned officer(s):Det. Sgt. Battista, Officer Morgan

Crime scene:A young, blonde female lies face-down on a rocky shoreline. Cause of death is undetermined.

Suspect(s):None cited.

Clue(s): A square patch of skin has been excised from her upper right shoulder. The significance is undetermined.

Blood evidence suggests...Little blood evidence exists and is yet to be analyzed.

FLASHBACKS
CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
DEVELOPMENTS WITH RITA
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS
  • Dexter and Rita are shown having sex (or in a post-coital embrace) 3 times throughout the episode. Dexter seems to enjoy emotionally connecting with Rita, but is still easily distracted from the physical aspects of their lovemaking (i.e. staring at his cell phone during intercourse and chuckling uneasily at her bold advances)
  • Dexter obliges to Cody's request to appear at his school for a Father's Day presentation. The "normalcy" of the situation brings Rita to tears.
  • Rita is more emotional and has a craving for chocolate pudding, which apparently only happens when she is pregnant. She tells Dexter she thinks she is pregnant.

  • Dexter and ADA Miguel Prado share a few moments alone together, and Dexter negates Prado's cherished belief that the soul of a person lives on forever.
  • At Oscar Prado's wake, Dexter cautiously tells ADA Prado that he doesn't have a brother, only a sister (fans of the show know better!)
  • Cody asks Dexter to come to Father/Son Day at his school to share his line of work with Cody's classmates. Dexter admires how Cody is "moving on with his life" and decides it is time to let go of his father, too.

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE

The title of this episode has a number of layers of significance to it. Firstly, the episode takes place on what would've been Harry's birthday, and Deb beckons Dexter to celebrate with her. Also, at the end of the episode it is found out that Dexter is to be a father of his own with Rita pregnant. Also, a common prayer in the Catholic faith is entitled Our Father.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

BEST MOMENTS
BEST LINES
  • Dexter pretends to be a heroin addict to get into Freebo's place.
  • Dexter gives a poor career day speech in Cody's classroom.
  • Even though the kids in Cody's class were clearly not impressed with Dexter's known career choice, Cody huged him afterwards and let Dexter know that even though he wasn't a big hit, that it didn't matter. He was just glad to have a Dad (his Dad) there.

  • Deb encounters Yuki, a feisty young member of Internal Affairs (I.A.) who is intent on recruiting Deb for her latest case. She tempts Deb by promising her that coveted detective's shield in exchange for providing useful information on her colleague, Quinn, who is being investigated for some suspicious activity. Deb snidely declines the offer.
  • [After biting into a donut] "Mmm, better than sex. Wait, no it's not"
--Vince Masuka to Dexter

If Rita's pregnant and decides to have an abortion (remember, she was looking at a brochure for hotel management careers), and then admits to Dexter that she's had an abortion before, would that make her (in Dexter's view) a ... wait for it ... serial killer?
