This is something that has bothered me for a while since season one, and I still can't figure it out. Does anyone know why Harry adopted Dexter and left Brian Moser?

"Ah but Dan and I only have one kid too, not through lack of trying or want of another, sometimes it just happens that way.
" Sorry, this was a direct reply to: "RE: Why did Harry only adopt Dexter? Dec 4 2007, 9:34 PM EST <<<I don't know how he could only take one<<< apoc, i think that stinks, too. i personally would have adopted both. one feels for brian. but remember harry and his wife only had one kid after they adopted dexter....one kid is a statement of some kind. overwhelmed with the burden maybe?"

Was LaGuerta's line to Debra a foreshadowing? Is Deb going to have to decide between her job and her brother?

My heart was racing for the majority of the episode. it was great! It really made me think.
Let's get Deb out of the way. It was a slow week for her. Not much going on there.
The development with Rita was really good. It's great how he opened up about what happened to his father to her (although it did come off as a little insincere for me). It looks like they might go back to being non-sexually active too. Who knows? (I guess the writers do).
And can you believe that Harry killed himself!? I was really shocked by that. The writers have taken everything I loved about Harry's character (him being the only thing Dexter can truly rely on in the show) and have made him just as morally ambiguous as Dexter himself (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I didn't like how Harry began to look like a jerk in this season, and it continued through this episode, but the twist about him feeling guilty about what his son was doing could be redemptive in some people's eyes (I just wish he didn't need redeeming in the first place). And the fact that Dexter inadvertently killed Harry actually made me really sad. Our poor boy Dexter... things just don't seem to be getting any easier for him.
Speaking of poor boys, poor Doakes! He is a major jerk, and if I had to choose between Dex and him I'd choose Dex, but things Doakes said and his reaction to Dexter in the episode really made me feel sorry for him. Now more than ever, I hope there's a solution to this conflict that doesn't involve Doakes dying. He almost seemed believable with his cries that him and Dexter could work something out.
Lila's still a b**ch. Setting Angel up with date rape. What's she thinking!? Everyone loves Angel!
In all, this was a great episode, and I am sorry I ever doubted the writer's abilities in the beginning of the season. Previews for next week's look even more intense! Sunday is only 604,800 seconds away!

"The way they've set it up, and if you watch Deb's scenes carefully, I believe that in the end, Deb will kill Doakes before he has a chance to tell anyone anything.
People keep reiterating to her about "if you had a loved one, wouldnt you do anything for them? To protect them?" When Dexter has his FBI detail removed, she was upset and convinced that Doakes is a killer who hates him. I have a feeling after all she's been through, and she has yet to take a life that we've seen, Doakes will be the first person she has to shoot in the line of duty.
I think before Doakes has any chance of getting out the truth, Deb will shoot him, still believing that he's out to kill or harm Dexter. The Butcher will fall on him, and Lundy and crew will have to close the case as all other leads will dry up.
In this way, Dexter will not be directly responsible for Doakes' death, and it sets up the next season for Dexter to deal with his new emotions, while Deb takes a darker path, trying to deal with the fact that she killed someone, not just in the line of duty, because deep down she wanted to kill him, she convinced herself that she would HAVE to kill Doakes because he was a threat, because she wants to save Dexter, because she wants to be the cop her father never let her be, and to resolve her feelings of fear and helplessness she felt with the Ice Truck Killer.
It also sets dexter up to get back to business, further explore the mystery of his past and his father, and to analyze his 'code'.
at least thats what i think. I also think Lila will be Dexter's first kill to protect his loved ones, but that doesnt fit his code, a sign that everything he once new and held dear is breaking down. Without the code, once it's broken, Dexter will walk a precipice, between being a Dark Avenger.. and becoming a Monster.
at least thats what i think :)" Good analysis on Deb - it would make perfect sense, given what we've been shown, for her to kill Doakes in trying to protect Dexter. My question would be whether she knows about Dexter at the time of the shooting. I don't want Deb to find out but I'm preparing myself for that to happen in one of the next two episodes.

So what do my fellow fan's think this "something" is? ----- Another secret concerning Dexter's past? Something to do with Harry's daughter/ Dexter's little sis?
Or... Something more personal about Harry? Maybe he had his own "dark passenger"? (I'm just throwing that one out there, as far-fetched as it is.)
... Could even be about Dexter's brother? Maybe he was Harry's bio-son? But Harry knew that he was too messed-up to raise normally, and loved Dexter's mother so tried to help her other son.

RE: my theory about lundy and "Something" about Harry

It's interesting that people are bothered by Dex being a bad guy. I thought the dialog between Dex and Doakes on the subject was really interesting. I agree with Dexter. He's using a higher standard of proof. Doakes has probably killed lots of innocent people. Doakes has tortured people, I guarantee. But he thinks he's justified because he's wearing a badge or in uniform or service or whatever.
Ultimately, it goes to the question of capital punishment. Is there ever justification to kill someone? Is it ever ok? Necessary? Is there a difference in making a killer go through a trial, appeal, years on death row and then the chair, during which time he can get away on a technicality, a clerical error, or escape (Bundy escaped and killed 3 more people while awaiting trial) or is it better to just end them. What's the standard of proof?
Is it better to kill out of duty or compulsion? If the person killing out of duty kills innocents, and the compulsive killer makes sure he's stopping future murders?
In Dexter's case, if he has the opportunity to kill, he will. Isn't it better that he only kills people who would kill innocents? Would anyone benefit if he were locked away for ever or killed? More innocents would die.
Fascinating questions.

OK, here's what we know. LaGuerta is apparently in love with Doakes. Deb could get her in trouble for not disclosing a phone call - would Deb lie to protect Dexter?
Lila will find out from Angel that Dex is getting back with Rita - what's the crazy skank going to do?
Doakes knows something about Harry - will Dex be able to bring himself to kill him? He can't let Doakes out of there, no matter what.
"Left Turn Ahead" almost sounds as if someone will follow Dex to the cabin next episode. I see a shoot out or something heinous happening, and my hopes for Season 3 are low right now.

Dexter has to find an excuse for his leg injury because Doakes will mention it to back up his story that he caught dexter red-handed. There is no way Dexter will kill Doakes, they have to deserve it remember. My guess is Dexter has fed's search his boat, they find gps transmitter, and track it to doakes in the container. So I predict Doakes in custody at end of this next episode. When Doakes does try to blame Dexter, Deb will come forward about Doakes' call to whatever-her-name-is. That break-in with Dexter's girlfriend's home - pretty sure Dexter will suggest it was Doakes and not mention Lila - OR perhaps Lila will take the fall as the bay harbour butcher in subsequent episodes if she does something naughty.
