FLASHBACKS

  • Dexter flashes back to when his father Harry's partner Davey Sanchez is slain and the killer gets off on a technicality. Dexter asks him how to "fix it," and Harry tells him there are two ways: to honor his fallen partner's memory and to "catch the bastard who did this to him."

  • Later, Harry tells Dexter that the person who killed his partner was caught but released on a technicality. When Dexter says it's unfair, his father replies "Life's not fair" and that " ... the world can always be set right again."
CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST

  • Has worked for the Miami Metro Police as a forensic specialist in blood splatter analysis for almost twelve years, and involved in 2,103 cases.

  • While preparing a kill site, he recalls The Code: "My father taught me one thing above all others: to be sure."

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
Developments with Rita:

  • Episode 2: Crocodile - Dexter WikiDexter and Rita go on a double-date with Deb and her mechanic boyfriend, who can't keep their hands off one another -- a fact which makes Rita sad.

  • Rita initiates a kiss with Dexter, but when he touches her breast, she immediately draws back. He again comforts her with right words, cementing Rita's belief that she has "found the one good, truly, decent man on the planet."

Interactions with others:

  • Enjoys going to court "to rub shoulders with the good people of the Sunshine State", presumably as an opportunity to seek out more victims.

  • At the Ricky Simmons crime scene, Lt. LaGuerta again makes overtures to Dexter, repulsing him.

  • When Deb finds out that the latest victim was a hooker that was familiar with during her times on vice, she hides her tears. Dexter sees this and comments, "My sister puts up a front so the world won't see how vulnerable she is; me, I put up a front so the world won't see how vulnerable I'm not."

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE

In the beginning of the episode, Dexter is floating in the water while some young people splash around. He refers to himself as a "sea monster". When we are first introduced to Matt Chambers, Dexter's case of the week, Dexter proclaims the tears he is crying in court are inauthentic, or "crocodile tears". At the end of the episode, Dexter lays in his tub, staring at the doll head he has, and his eyes are the only body parts that raise above the water, much like a crocodile's eyes would in the wild.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
Best Moments/Revelations:

  • Ice Truck Killer calling cardThe Ice Truck Killer tapes a severed doll head to Dexter's refrigerator door; inside the freezer is the corresponding body of the doll, dismembered in the same way as the Ice Truck Killer's victims. At the end of the episode, Dexter returns to his apartment after he kills Matt Chambers to find that the Ice Truck Killer has come back and removed the doll body parts from the freezer.

  • Dexter alone in the police lab, sprays luminol on his face, turns off the lights and shines a blue light, fascinated by the specks of blood.

Best Lines:

  • Angel"You must have been a mother f****** at cat's cradle!" (Angel to Dexter, at a crime scene)

  • "If God is in the details, and if I believed in God, then He's in this room with me. I just wish He'd brought an extension cord." (Dexter, at a kill site)

  • "I can kill a man, dismember his body, and be home in time for Letterman. But knowing what to say when my girlfriend is feeling insecure -- I'm totally lost." (Dexter, lamenting his inability to connect with Rita normally)

  • "We have an elephant in the room, and its name is sex." (Dexter, to Rita)

  • "Our boss, Lt. LaGuerta: in keeping with her total sense of entitlement, she has this ... attraction to me. And I thought I was creepy."

  • "In the slaughterhouses, they stun the animals before they butcher them. It's the humane thing to do. Those animals, they're the lucky ones."

  • "There are no secrets in life: just hidden truths that lie beneath the surface."

EPISODE TRIVIA:
  • Revealing mistakes: When Dexter's browsing the reports about Matt Chambers' past DUI infringements, the last page shows the title of an article in South Boston Daily claiming "Matt Rasmussen of South Boston Arrested" though the rest of the article is about Matt Brewster - a name used in Albuquerque. The article is identical to the previous one in Albuquerque Times Standard except for the first couple of words.

  • As Dexter and Angel are comparing the DNA samples from the piece of flesh in Ricky Simmons' mouth and the drop of blood from the kitchen of the Simmons house, the computer screen shows the source of the samples to be "Jimmy Sanders" and "Residence: Jimmy Sanders".

  • During Dexter's flashback scene in which he talks with his father about what happens when a cop is killed, there is a shot in which Dexter's father's mouth on the upper left corner of the screen moves twice without any sound coming from it.

  • When Deb is asked to see Lt. LaGuerta and Captain Matthews, she is talking to Dexter in uniform and on her left shoulder is her radio. It is there when she hugs the Captain after being re-assigned and then it is gone as she stands ready to leave the room.

  • When Angel kneels down to retrieve the cell phone from under the couch, he puts his knee in the middle of a blood stain

  • Sgt. Doakes takes down Norberto's photo from the chart. When Lt. Laguerta later comes to speak with him, not only has the photo reappeared, but he's seen taking down another photo. In the close-up it's the photo on the right in the middle but in the long shot it's the photo on the bottom right.
  • Captain Tom Matthews remarks after the hand is found, that Agent Morgan did a good job like her father. He then remarks how it must be in her genes, also in Dexter's. He, however, knows intimately that Dexter was adopted.

I noticed when one of the cops finds out that Deb is the one who found the Ice Truck he comments that Deb and Dex being Harry Morgan's kids and good cops that "it must be in the genes". So it seems like it's not common knowledge on the force that Dex was adopted.
