EPISODE 3: "An Inconvenient Lie"

Dexter Episode 3 - An Inconvenient Lie

Episode summary:Dexter sets his sights on a new victim: a murderer so repulsive it seems only fitting that he's a used-car salesman. Dexter almost admires the man though for his smooth-talking charm and effortless lying, which Dexter knows he lacks himself these days. Dexter's been unable to lie to Rita about his midnight activities, which has her thinking that he's a drug addict. She's threatened to leave him if he doesn't commit to a 12-step program to deal with his supposed addiction. While in this recovery, though, Dexter meets a mysterious woman named Lila.

FLASHBACKS

CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
Developments with Rita:

  • Dexter is at odds with going to NA. He can't explain the real truth and Rita refuses to be with him unless he continues "therapy". Rita is willing to end the relationship rather than go through what she did with her ex again.

  • Dexter finally realizes he has a true attachment to Rita

  • Unfortunately for Rita because she "forces" Dexter's hand to go to "rehab". Rita now sees she is going to have "competition" in keeping Dexter from Lila his "NA"(dark passenger) sponsor.
Interactions with others:

  • Doakes is still hounding him but finally thinks he's figured Dexter out when he catches him at the NA meeting. Now Doakes sympathizes (for now).

  • Beautiful, smokey, mysterious Lila (Jaime Murray) is introduced as Dexter's sponsor at NA. Dexter has coffee with Lila at her invitation (was she wanting something more than to probe about Dexter's true addiction?), Dexter is unaffected, indifferent.

  • The first official meeting takes place between Lundy and Dexter. Dexter introduces himself whilst standing in the tent with the bodies. Lundy replies, "I know who you are..."

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
Best Moments:

  • Seeing Roger's hairpiece alongside the photographs of his victims.

  • Dexter's glee upon ridding himself of Doakes at the NA meeting.

  • When Rita spots Dexter's sponsor and the recognition that only another woman can identify with: Hussy-alert!

  • Lundy's speech to Debra gives her a little wake up call. She opens her eyes and sees what is right in front of her. The clues into solving a major puzzle in the case!
Best Lines:

  • Doakes: "You owe me a Michelin, *other*ucker!"

  • “I’m not sure what I am…I just know there’s something dark in me, and I hide it. I certainly don’t talk about it but its there. Always. This dark passenger. And when he’s driving, I feel alive—half sick with the thrill…complete wrongness. I don’t fight him. I don’t want to. He’s all I’ve got. Nothing else could love me. Not even, especially not me. Or is that just a lie the dark passenger tells me? Because lately, there are these moments where I feel connected to something else, someone. It’s like the mask is slipping and things, people that never mattered before…are starting to matter. It scares the hell out of me."

  • "When the manhunt is on, the hunted go shopping."

When Dexter has his victim on the table and the man is running off at the mouth--Dexter actually reacts with emotion for the first time. When the victim calls Lila a c***, Dexter's emotions run wild and his stabs him, possibliy before he actually meant to. A few seconds before, he was admiring the man for his ability to lie. What gives?
