All in the Family

Episode summary:
 After a botched marriage proposal, Dexter has to figure out how to convince Rita that he is looking for more than a convenient merger of finances and fatherhood. But Deb’s case of a woman’s murdered fiancée offers hope for Dexter in strange ways. Meanwhile, Miguel’s brother, Ramon, is going off the rails in the hunt for their little brother Oscar’s murderer. Unfortunately, Oscar’s (supposed) murderer was killed by Dexter Morgan, and that’s something he desperately wants to keep secret.

Victim(s): Jack Rice, aged 34

Assigned officer(s): Debra Morgan and Joseph Quinn

Crime scene: A white male is found on the floor of his home. He is laying on his left side in a pool of blood. Blunt force trauma to the head is suspected to be the cause of death. Blood spatter covers the walls and surrounding furniture. The man's supposed fiance is covered with the victim's blood. The backdoor was forced open with a crowbar.

Suspect(s): The case bears a similar M.O. to a series of break-ins that recently occurred in the neighborhood. The detectives first pursue that lead, but later focus on the bereaved fiance, Fiona.

Clue(s): M.O. matches that of recent crimes in the area, blunt object covered with the victim's blood found on a table, Fiona's busted knee.

Blood evidence suggests: The assailant has a small, feminine frame evidenced by the blood spatter pattern on the wall. This contradicts Fiona's statement that the intruder was 6 feet tall. Fiona becomes the main suspect.

Case Closed: Fiona confesses to having an obsession with the victim and becoming enraged when he rejected her advances. She killed him out of love.

  • Dexter proposes to Rita on a whim when the children ask how come they aren't married. Rita rejects his proposal as disingenuous (and does so a second time after Rita is fired). He finally gets a "yes" from her when he essentially recites something he heard somebody say earlier about true love.
  • Dexter is the only one who agrees to go to Matsuka's keynote speech.
  • Astor gives Dexter attitude and claims, "You're not my father" when Dexter asks her to play nice with another kid.
  • Dexter meets Miguel on the beach to have another one of their "heart-to-heart" conversations. Miguel again confides in Dexter about how close he has always been with his brothers. He emphazises how blessed he has felt to have people to talk to and share secrets with. Now he laments that he may not be able to trust Ramon anymore, and how in hindsight he lost Oscar to drugs long before his death. Dexter takes these words to heart, but is also pleased that his meddling has worked.

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE
The title is sort of a triple entendre. Perhaps most recognizably, it bears the same title as the popular 70's TV sitcom. Early on in the episode, we see it applies to Dexter's acceptance of starting a family with Rita. Towards the end, the title is applicable to Miguel Prado's immense pride towards the tight-knit relationship he shares with his brothers. He muses how secrets always stay within a family.
  • "Family man. Husband and father. Sounds so upstanding; harmless. Much better than lives alone and keeps to himself." (Dexter)
  • "Deb, your butt's buzzing." (Dexter)
  • "He's like the f***in' witness whisperer!" (Deb in awe of Quinn's people skills)
  • "I'm flea combing my dog tonight" (Deb declining to attend Masuka's keynote address)
  • "E tu Dexte?" (Masuka's Caesar-like plead to Dexter hoping he'll attend his speech)

    If this entire season was looked at as one long play, then tonight's episode would mark the end of the first act. We're a third of the way through the season and to me, it's all looking good. I think we're definitely clear for a strong season now.

    The first thing I think of when I consider this episode is that it seems that Matsuka is going to have a more dramatic role this season. We saw him come to the realization that nobody likes him as more than the office "funny guy" and even then he can become annoying. I'd like to see this pan out.

    I was a bit put off by Dexter's hasty decision to propose to Rita. He just decided it in a matter of seconds, without even considering what a huge responsibility that is on top of having a baby (plus when is a married guy ever going to get enough time by himself so he can go kill somebody?). Obviously this was the next step in the progression of their relationship so its not that bad that it was rushed, but I just couldn't help but as though it was out of character a little.

    Deb continued to push the envelope on just how unprofessional she can be. I sincerely like Deb. I love her character, last season she was one of my favorites for sure (she was the only one who stood up to Lila and believed in Dexter), but this season I sometimes wonder if I'm suppose to feel sorry for her. She seems to screw up on every case she's on (how did she advance so far?), and always realizes way after the audience does that she is going to "hook-up" with somebody she shouldn't.

    The Angel ordeal sort of came out of nowhere and went nowhere for me, and it seems La Guerta's motives are never as straight-forward as she says they are. Next week's episode looks intense by the look of the previews; and I thought Dexter was faking those emotions at the very end, but since he didn't explicitly say so, I'm starting top wonder.
