EPISODE 3.5: "Turning Biminese"

Turning Bimenese

Episode summary:
While Dexter struggles with how to handle Rita’s desire for them to move in together before they get married, Miguel tells Dexter about a husband who has gotten away with killing two of his wives for financial gain. For Dexter, this seems like the perfect candidate to satisfy his dark urge and his need, like every man under relationship pressures, to get away. Dexter tracks the murderer to Bimini. While on the hunt, Rita has a medical emergency and he is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Debra works with Anton, her confidential informant to track down one of Freebo’s criminal confidants. But Debra finds herself oddly (and disgustingly) attracted to Anton.

Dexter's Open Case Files
Add image of victimDescription of crime: A young woman is suffocated and dumped in her front yard. A patch of skin is missing on the nape of her neck. It is officially the Sheriff's case, but Homicide is teaming up with the Sheriff's dept. due to a possible link to their open cases.

Victim(s): Name unknown

Assigned officer(s):Joseph Quinn and Vince Masuka

Crime scene: A residential neighborhood. Victim lies face-down on the grass in the front yard. She is wearing a yellow dress. A large patch of skin has been excised (post-mortem) on the nape of her neck. The neighbor called it in.

Suspect(s):None named

Clue(s): Similar M.O. to recent murders that Homicide is investigating

Blood evidence suggests...The missing skin appears to have been the site of a tattoo, and does not match the same pattern as previous victims. Also, cotton fibers found in the victim's nose suggest she was was suffocated, and not strangled like the others.

Victim Name: Ethan Turner Ethan Turner

Age/
Occupation: Serial Sleazebag

Where/how Dexter stalks victim: Dexter first checks him out at a resort/hobby store and makes casual conversation with him. Once he discovers that Ethan is headed on a cruise to Bimini, Bahamas, he follows him onto the ship. Once onboard, he creeps up on Ethan after he gets out of the shower in his room.

Why victim deserves it
: According to Miguel Prado, he got away with his first wife's murder by staging it as an overdose of pain meds. Then recently, he got rid of his second wife while on a cruise in International waters where Miguel has no jurisdiction.

Dexter's kill methods and rituals: Dexter had to hurry everything since he was under a tight schedule, but his methods and rituals were very much the same. No table was available so Dexter just had to sort of pin him down on the ground with his knees. He also wore disposable booties--the kind surgeons wear in the O.R. Also missing from his usual ritual were pictures of the killer's victims.

Victim's last words: "What the-"

Location of killing:
He kills and disposes of the victim inside his private room within one hour by chopping up the body, wrapping each piece in a garbage bag, and tossing them out the room's porthole.

Close calls/slip-ups: Dexter "took care" of Ethan just one day after Miguel shared with him the frustration he felt over letting this guy get away. Once Miguel got the news that Ethan went missing, he immediately sensed Dexter was responsible (especially since the Coast Guard couldn't find Dex where he said he'd be). In a way, Miguel had set this up, and Dexter came through for him to finish a job he couldn't legally do himself. Dexter's overzealousness could not be hidden from Miguel.

DAYDREAMS
CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST
  • Dexter imagines movers taking things from his apartment while Harry tells Dexter that he will have to move on from his old life. Harry instructs one mover to leave behind a floor lamp, citing "Its not Rita's style". He emphasizes to Dexter that marriage is 50/50, then pulls out Dex's slide collection.
  • While waiting for the cruise ship to depart, Dexter imagines Harry equating Dexter's stalking of his victim to cheating on Rita. To this, Dexter replies, "I will make time for my Dark passenger, and Rita." He tells him that he must choose which thing will be his wife, and which will be his mistress, and more importantly, which is Dexter's top priority. Then Dexter notices who is sitting next to Harry--his mother! Dexter winces as Harry rubs suntan lotion on her back.

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
DEVELOPMENTS WITH RITA
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS
  • Dexter becomes cold and withdrawn when Rita presents to him brochures of available real estate. He flatly responds "No" to the invitation to go house hunting the next day. Rita is visibly hurt by the rejection.

  • Dexter is off stalking and killing somebody while Rita (and their unborn child) is having a medical emergency. Dexter is completely out of reach from everybody, and Rita says she doesn't know what she'd do if they lost the baby and Dexter wasn't there.
  • Rita concedes to Dexter that they shouldn't move in together until after they get married. Dex says he is ready (after having had a recent epiphany that the baby is suddenly very important to him).
  • Rita says she wants to get married before she "starts to show."

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE
  • Miguel tells Dexter he is proud and very pleased that he killed Ethan Turner. He tells Dexter that he understands him, and has nothing to worry. He is on Dex's side.
  • Dexter poses as some yacht club yuppie to gain information from Ethan.

The title "Turning Biminese" is a playful nod to the
successful 1980 new wave rock song "Turning
Japanese", by the Vapors. And of course, the
Biminese part comes from Dexter's trip Bimini--an island 53 miles east of Miami--to stalk his latest victim.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
BEST MOMENTS
BEST LINES
  • Miguel tells Dexter that he knows he is a murderer, and embraces his style.
  • Masuka proves himself to everyone. After days of reform, he injects some much needed humor into a tense situation.
  • When Dexter is poised and ready to kill Ethan, the excitement is perfectly etched into his face--sweat dripping from his brow and a crazed, wild look in his eyes.

  • "Laying naked on a table, helpless? No thanks" (Dexter)
  • "Science is a cold-hearted bitch with a 14 inch strap-on" (Masuka)
  • "And here I am. Paradox personified. Taking life. Creating life." (Dexter)
  • "This dress-shoe-wearing, please-and-thank you, zombie Masuka is f***in' creeping me out!" (Deb)

Since it was first revealed that Rita was with child, I predicted that she would have a miscarriage, however last week I recanted my prediction and it looks like it was a smart thing to do. Everything turned out "okie-dokie" for Rita and the baby so now I'm fairly sure that this baby is going to happen. It doesn't seem likely that the show will inject ANOTHER miscarriage scare into the show now that we just had one. The only way I can imagine the baby not happening is if Rita is injured badly somehow and in the hospital they'd have to terminate the baby to save Rita (but I don't feel to sure that's going to happen).

I'm glad Matsuka dominated Ramon today and sort of "came back". It is sort of sad to see his little character development end already. After one episode, really guys?

Deb talking to Freebo's doorman looks like it will guarantee death for that kid. Certainly since it showed the binocular vision of them from far away. Is somebody stalking Deb. Could it be Quinn? Anton? The clips on Showtime.com mention even Ramon as a suspect. I could see that happening. Especially since Miguel and Dexter will be going into business together, it could make it difficult since Dexter may want to kill Ramon if he is some kind of skinning killer.

Speaking of which, I predicted since episode one that Miguel would team up with Dexter. Looks like its definitely going to happen, but the only question I have is will Dexter tell Miguel he was THE Bay Harbor Butcher?

Poor Deb keeps getting her heart broken. She should probably have a better taste in men.

I think that about covers it. La Guerta was lacking majorly in this episode. I predict Dexter and Miguel will start playing it fast and loose together and start getting too comfortable, and by episode ten, I bet Miguel will die (but not by Dexter's hands).

a near miscarriage and a Dexter no where to be found. Miguel now using Dexter to do his dirty work for getting rid of scum and keeping his own hands clean. Miguel may be friend of foe, but I still lean to the later, and the tension is not helping the home situation with Dex is it??
