Dexter Episode 7 - "That Night, a Forest Grew"

Episode summary:The police think they have a break in the case when the Bay City Butcher sends a 32 page manifesto to a local newspaper. Only thing is Dexter had a very specific purpose in doing what he did, as the police now go off into every direction imaginable. With Sgt. Doakes having set his sights on him yet again, Dexter realizes that he's going to have to play hardball to protect himself and so takes him head on. Rita comes to the end of her tether with her domineering mother. Lila sells a sculpture for a tidy sum and she and Dexter have a romantic dinner out. When Dexter tells her that he is going to a school event for Rita's son, she takes drastic action to get his attention. Meanwhile, Deb breaks up with Gabriel due to her changing feelings for Lundy. She then decides to pursue those feelings unknowing if Lundy feels anything in return.

Developments with Rita:

  • He attends Cody's cultural report about Saudi Arabia at Cody's school alongside Rita and Astor. Rita looks lovingly at Dexter when he puts his arm around Astor.

  • Dexter disappoints Rita after he first promised to get ice cream with her and the kids and then bails out when he hears Lila is in trouble.


Interactions with others:

  • Dexter and Doakes have a heated moment in Dexter's office, resulting in Dexter head-butting Doakes. This provokes Doakes to physically attack Dexter in front of the police team.

  • Deb confronts Dexter while he lays in bed after being with Lila. She scorns him for sleeping with a "skank" and abandoning Rita and her kids.

  • Dexter and Lila take a walk then break into someone's house to have sex.
  • The step father who is the suspect in Doake's investigation pleads with Dexter that he didn't kill his step daughter.
  • Dexter has dinner with Lila after she sells one of her pieces.

  • While Lundy's task force are arguing over the meaning of the Bay Harbor Butcher's Manifesto, Lundy stops everyone and suggests that the killer has a law enforcement background.

    Goofs:
    • Factual errors: Doakes would not legally be allowed to interrogate a suspect who had obtained legal counsel without that suspect's lawyer present.

    • When Dexter and Lila are at the restaurant Dexter goes to drink from his champagne glass then we see a different angle and he goes to drink from it again.
