EPISODE 9: "Resistance is Futile"

Episode 9: "Resistance is Futile" - Dexter Wiki

Episode summary: Dexter notices that he is being tailed by an undercover car as he leaves Rita's house, where he had fallen asleep in a lawn chair. He follows Harry's Code and goes to his apartment to get ready for work instead of heading to the cabin to dispose of Jimenez's body. LaGuerta tries in vain to reach Doakes on the phone to see why he stood her up the night before. Deb and Lundy wake up after spending the night together after they discovered that the Bay Harbor Butcher is probably someone in Homocide. After pillow talk, they end up discussing whether or not they should announce their relationship at work; Lundy believes in "full disclosure" while Deb appears reluctant tell everyone just yet. Their discussion is interrupted by a phone call for Lundy, and Deb and viewers are treated to a shot of Lundy's bare backside as he hurriedly gathers items from his closet before heading for the shower. Lundy has to leave, perhaps for a break in the BHB case, and the issue of letting people at work know they are dating is unresolved. Deb later tries to let Lundy know that she is neither unsure or embarrassed about being with him, but notes that he is preoccupied with work ("something's up") matters that he does not reveal to her. Doakes is named the #1 suspect in the Bay Harbor Butcher case because Dexter's "trophy slides" were found in his possession, and he goes M.I.A. Dexter is picked up by an FBI detail and taken to the station. Lundy and Matthews ask Dexter what the slides "mean" and end up making him the first forensic tech in the chain of evidence. A protective FBI detail is assigned to guard Dexter at all times. Matthews remarks that Dexter has more reason than most to want to get to the bottom of things. To keep Deb from becoming part of his layer of protection, Dexter tells her that he would be worried for her safety if she were near him, and urges her to move into her new apartment. Lila continues to try to get under Dexter's skin by cozying up to Angel and reminding Dexter that she's the only one who can accept him for who is really is. Dexter and Rita make plans to have dinner together and talk about a reconciliation. When LaGuerta approaches Deb and asks her to intervene with Lundy about Doakes, an over-defensive Deb blurts out the news that she is "sleeping" with Lundy as Angel and Lundy are strolling by. Dexter escapes from his protective detail by climbing out of his bathroom window and making his way to his boat. Doakes surprises Dexter as he is disposing of Jimenez' dismembered body and they engage in struggle that leaves Dexter with a gunshot wound and Doakes unconscious in a cage in the cabin deep in the Everglades.

CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
Developments with Rita:

  • Rita finds Dex sleeping outside her house, not realizing he's protecting her from Lila.

  • Dexter apologizes for getting mixed up with Lila. He even expresses regret, and says Rita and the kids were "a lot to have" and that he had messed it up "stupendously." Rita can't let go of the fact he was with another woman.

  • Rita calls Dex because she thought about his apology and wants him back. They agree to meet the next day. Dexter's FBI security team looks as he talks to her on his cell.

Interactions with others:

  • Dex and the kids hug each other like they're never going to see each other again - Dexter may actually have sobbed.

  • Dexter is given a protective detail, so he asks Deb to stay away, saying she'll be safer, but he really needs her out of the way.

  • Lila plays up to Angel to manipulate Dexter; Dexter confronts her in the ladies' room of the bar. She insists she's the only one for him.

  • When Dexter is shown the box of slides, he says they are 'trophies', thinking that he's confessing. In actuality, they think he's talking about Doakes. When he realizes this, he plays along, and describes Doakes the way Doakes described him.

  • Angel Batista asks Dexter if he's o.k. with him hooking up with Lila. Dexter tells him she's crazy, but Angel isn't thinking with the right head.

When I heard Lila's witchy cackle as Dex turned to leave his office it made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. And howcan his coworkers be so crass as to wine and dine her knowing she and Dex broke up and he looks horrified to be near her. For cops they are very dense. They should be able to pick up on this or maybe his outright statments about her being nuts.

Come on guys think with your brain instead of your ......

You can clearly see that Dexter is given a "place of power" in regard to the slides. Whether or not this is Lundy's chance to "trap" him is the only question

Soon enough we will know...

Sweet Sassy Molassy! That show almost gave me a heart attack! Last week was super intense, and this week promptly followed in suit!

The dream sequence in the beginning was pretty funny, and when Dexter apologized to Rita afterward (and hugged the kids), it made my heart smile. I could've done without seeing Lundy's butt though. Although it does look like Deb and Lundy are very happy together, and Deb's been through some rough times, so she deserves it.

As we all predicted, Doakes did get pinned as a suspect for the Bay Harbor Butcher. I had a little mini-crisis when Doakes and Dexter were having the stand-off on the dock. I didn't know how Dexter was gonna weasel his way out of that one. I said this about last week's episode and I'll say it again: I didn't the the show would, but IT SO WENT THERE! I have no idea how Dexter's gonna fix his bullet wound, especially since he wasn't suppose to be outside of his apartment. I predict Deb or Rita will see it and start asking too many questions.

And Lila! What a psycho woman! Looks like she is gonna start using Angel. I bet Dexter is gonna have to save him too! I have to confess though, I was a little worried when they were in the bathroom arguing, because it did seem like Dexter was touched by her words, and I didn't want him going back to her.

I am also really glad it looks like Dexter will be with Rita again. Dexter also seemed genuinely excited to see her again when he told the FBI man they were meeting the next day. I'm so relieved.

In all, this episode wasn't as good for me as last week because all I wanted was Dexter to wise up to Lila, and that happened last week. I'm also very happy Harry made an appearance in this episode again, although he still comes off as sort of a jerk. I wish he was portrayed as the good guy he was in season one (but the season isn't over yet, so it can still be so).

I was a bit surprised at Dexter overpowering Doakes. I had lost track of the fact that Dex too had martial arts training and was skillfully adept at using his talents more so and more often than Doakes over a period of time.

It was easy to conclude that Doakes had to go down due to the nature of the show. Then there’s the code. Rule # 1: Don’t get caught, rule # 2 no innocents. Doakes fits 2 but this tough, hard core LE can not resist shooting bad people out of shear desire. For Dexter it’s an urge. Desire or urge it’s this very thread that has me wondering how they may find common ground.

“Have you decided what you’re going to do!?” “Yes, but I don’t think you’re going to like it.”

Dexter unfurls his bag of goodies and this may be the turning point for Doakes. He wants to live to enjoy any fame and glory be it the arrest and capture of Dexter or some future collar. Dexter already offered up a peace offering by stating that he could prove Doakes’ innocence. Perhaps we find the weak side of the all-go-no-quit Doakes. He does not want to die. Hacked to bits is not what he had in mind not to mention that it does not fit tidy into “Harry’s Code”.

Perhaps Doakes agrees to back off if allowed to live and has his name cleared while promising Dexter that “He’ll be watching” and “the next time you try to kill, I’ll be there” because “this is not over”.

Doakes is tainted and this truly good cop has a shaky history of shootings and brutality. Even if allowed to live and be set free, could he turn the BHB blame on to Dexter? I don’t think it will stand up in court.

Dexter’s GSW:

Dexter can slip back into his apartment and stage an accidental discharge. Dexter, whom was never a gun type, has shot himself while preparing his weapon in fear of Doakes. He is a blood spatter expert after all. The guys at the precinct may heckle him a bit and request that he leave the guns to the real cops.

The GSW is easily dismissible.
