Dexter's Open Case Files
Add image of victimDescription of crime: Assault and kidnapping

Victim(s): Anton Briggs

Assigned officer(s):
Debra Morgan and Joseph Quinn

Crime scene:By the dumpster of Anton's apartment building based on a clue that Dex noticed there was no bag in the trash can.

Suspect(s): "The skinner" (who they suspect is George King)

Clue(s): Trimmed trees around the apartment complex, broken trash bag, tire skid marks on ground.

Blood evidence suggests: A splotch of blood mixed with hair located on the wall by the dumpster suggests Anton was assaulted from behind and had his head slammed against the wall.

Victim Found: Anton is found tied to a chair--most of his right shoulder skinned-- in a warehouse under a freeway overpass. The location was discovered based upon a tip given by one of George King's foremen. The trimmed trees around the foreman's house was a major clue that Mr. King is the man they are looking for as it scares the crap out of the foreman.

DAYDREAMS
CLUES TO DEXTER'S PAST
  • Dexter overhears LaGuerta being troubled by her inability to contact Ellen Wolf. Dexter realizes that Miguel was also gone last night, and Harry appears to him to reiterate the obvious. Ellen's missing? Miguel out late?
  • Dexter visits Ellen's apartment and sprays the floors with luminol. When a blood stain fluoresces under the UV light, he looks up to find Harry standing before him. Harry is holding up the lifeless hand of Ellen Wolf, taunting Dexter.
  • When Dexter unearths the body of Ellen Wolf, he is speechless. Climbing out of the grave he sees Harry whistling (the tune "Camptown Races") beside him and shoveling dirt. Dexter knows that Ellen didn't deserve to die and allows Harry to admonish him. However, Harry admits to Dexter that rubbing it in won't change things.
  • Dex's outrage in his head about Miguel's abuse of friendship is the first time we have truly seen Dex angry since Lila and even then, this is more so than we have seen before.
  • Dexter continues to bounce his concerns off (ghost) Harry. The man who raised Dexter continues to be his voice of reason. Dexter is not ready to let go of that yet.

DEXTER'S RELATIONSHIPS
DEVELOPMENTS WITH RITA
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS
  • Dexter tells Rita he prefers to Hazelnut cake over the chocolate when he is rushed to investigate Miguel's shirt further.
  • When Rita comforts Sylvia over her distrust for Miguel, Dexter just stands there awkwardly. Rita gives him a look and he backs out the door citing "work" is the reason he's bolting.

  • Dexter unearth's Ellen's body just to teach Miguel a lesson that he isn't untouchable. He has no intentions of getting Miguel caught.
  • Dexter realizes Miguel has been playing him for a fool. The shirt Miguel gave Dexter didn't even have Freebo's real blood on it--it was cow's blood! Miguel has been lying to him from the very beginning, and he tried to get away with killing Ellen Wolf without Dexter finding out.

SIGNIFICANCE OF EPISODE TITLE
The phrase about last night is often used as an opening line for explaining one's own suspicious whereabouts the night before. In this episode, Miguel was unaccounted for between 12am and sunrise, which we later find out was due to his murderous rendezvous with Ellen Wolf. Miguel's wife is certain he is having an affair, so Miguel finds himself needing a particularly strong alibi.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
BEST MOMENTS
BEST LINES
  • Dexter finding Ellen Wolf's body in the cemetery and realizing what Miguel had done/has become.
  • Dexter internally freaking out when he discovers Miguel is a liar.
  • When Angel gets protective of his girlfriend, he tells Masuka to quit talking dirty around her. But Masuka insists that Barbara started the whole conversation! She is, after all, an undercover prostitute, Masuka is chump change compared to her "john's."
  • Dexter sheepishly admits to Harry that he was right about Miguel and braces himself for an "I told you so" that Harry refuses to state.
  • Dexter is speechless when he discovers that Miguel has been lying to him, and feeding him the same BS he gave Rita when they had a "heart-to-heart".
  • Miguel and LaGuerta are getting closer using their recent "losses" as a gateway to other possibilities.
  • "Anton's a Big Guy. Lot of skin... that's meant to be comforting" (Dexter to Deb)
  • "There's finally an emotion I don't have to fake. Today, I feel something real" (Dexter)
  • "Did he just lie? To me?" (Dexter musing about Miguel)
  • "Hey, get a room! Actually, no, don't." (Masuka)
  • "She's like the Wikipedia of Perv" (Masuka talking to Angel about Barbara Gianna)
  • "Can I be honest? You're an idiot." (Rita to Miguel)
  • "I didn't create a monster, I was used by one." (Dexter)

Explosive. This episode was explosive. A lot of people thought that the shirt Miguel gave Dexter was a phoney, but I didn't think so, but it looks like I was wrong. So now we know Miguel has been playing Dexter, but what I want to know is how long and why and how exactly? Does he know Dexter killed Oscar?

I believe I read that Jimmy Smits was only signed on for 10 out of 12 episodes this season, so that would mean next episode is his last. Is Dexter going to kill him? It sort of looks that way, but wouldn't that be too cliche? Every season, Dexter is forced to kill the person closest to him. Maybe Miguel will become a victim of the skinner. Then again, Miguel is a big guy. Could the skinner take him on all by himself? Is the skinner even working alone? So many questions!

Also, remember when Miguel was alone with the skinner, and the camera's weren't on? I'm betting something happened there. They spoke candidly I'm sure. That should probably turn into something.

Also, regarding the skinner, why is he doing what he does? Has some clear motive been established that I'm missing or will we find out? Why is he skinning people involved in the Freebo case? How does he even know Freebo? Like I said, so many questions!

This episode has also almost made me forget about two plot points this season:

1). Is anything going to happen with the Yuki thing? That story has finished I guess. Is Deb going to get her shield. I personally like Quinn so I hope he's around next season.

2). Is this baby going to happen? I kept thinking (hoping) it wouldn't because I think it will change the dynamic of the show too drastically, but I have my doubts. I'm positive the marriage will happen, but there's still a chance the baby won't.

All in all, great episode! And did you see the preview for next week? Didn't I say Miguel and La Guerta would get together!

DarklyDreamingDex Is this becoming the formula? 1 Nov 29 2008, 7:18 PM EST by mike91848

I'm a little worried that this no-bounds series has found a niche formula: Dexter closes off- Dexter finds someone he thinks he can trust - he lets them in on his little secrete- they develop or grow a blood lust - dexter offs them - dexter closes off.
