IF I HAD A HAMMER
Airdate: November 1, 2009
Directed by: Romeo Tirone
Written by: Lauren Gussis

Dexter knows it's only a matter of time before Miami Metro discovers the Trinity Killer's latest handiwork. Therefore, he has to work doubly hard to stay one step ahead of their investigation. Dexter has begun to realize that the closer he gets to Trinity, the more he stands to learn from this very different beast. Trinity hides behind a well-kept mask, and getting behind that facade will require some extra prodding on Dexter's part. Meanwhile, Debra becomes frustrated when she finds herself shut out from her own case. She considers bending the rules in the name of justice, risking her career in the process. LaGuerta and Batista come to regret a major decision, and realize that by playing by the rules they may have painted themselves into a corner. And when the friction between Rita and Dexter comes to a head, Dexter gleans relationship advice from a most unlikely source.

  • "If I Had a Hammer" is the title of a folk song written in 1949 by Pete Seeger. The song became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement.
If I had a hammer
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening
All over this land
I'd hammer out danger
I'd hammer out a warning
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

In this episode, Dexter is amazed that Trinity doesn't even bother to hide the hammer he used to the murder the man with recently. In fact, he uses it openly as he builds a house. At the end of the episode, Arthur gives the hammer to Dexter as a gift.

Great episode! Much like how a lot of people already predicted, Trinity is reliving the murder of his family through his kills, in some capacity at least. Trinity made sure to point his victim's hand towards the ash on the wall. Does he WANT to get caught?

I like how Dexter has his own personal little work shed in the backyard now. Realistically I think that keeping blood slides in the AC unit in the shed out there is a little too risky. I don't think they need to be refrigerated, so I'd just as soon stash them in the secret compartment in the trunk where Dex keeps all the kill tools.

Anyone else notice how Dex's blood spatter room got an upgrade? Like how in season one, Dexter only had a little wall to work at, and then they upgraded him to a full fledged office, now they've given his little blood spatter room viewing windows for people to observe him work with. How nice of the department.

I really like the Arthur/"Kyle" relationship. It reminds me of the Dexter/Miguel relationship from last season. And I liked last season a lot. What's cool about this relationship is that it's also got some hints of the Dexter/'Rudy" relationship from season one, but this time, Dexter is playing the role of the Ice Truck Killer sort of.

Are La Guerta and Angel really done? I doubt it.

Usually I don't wonder why a serial idiot is a serial idiot but The Trinity Killer bugs the hell out of me because he seems so normal yet as we can see he isn't. I really wonder how many times that monster of his has been exsposed to his family. Like I said only he would be twisted enough to purchase a framing hammer from a store attendant that resembles Jesus Christ. What's up with the Mustang given to his son and I really believe that monster of his is hidden around the good deeds bible and perfect family image he is portraying I believe his family has been exsposed to it in some way. Dexter will learn the chamillion behavior necessary to blend in but the monster will stay hidden with his code. Quinn is dirty and will justify any behavior to suit his needs just like the reporter that he is with. What is he hiding besides the obvious.
