| Date of birth: November 2, 1964 Birth place: Brooklyn, New York Eye color: Brown Height: Family: Spouse Mark Gordon, married since 1993; twin sister, Loraine; seven siblings Education: Kingsborough Community College (left after one semester); Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (left after knee injury); The Acting Studio. Actor bio: Raised in Queens by her mother (a singer) and father (police officer), who both moved to New York in the 50s. Ms. Velez dreamed of becoming an actress ever since she played a groundhog in a school play during second grade. Immediately following high school, she and her twin sister received partial scholarships from Alvin Ailey, which led to her first job performing in the national touring company of the musical Dreamgirls, which led to her role as an understudy Phylicia Rashad in Broadway's Into the Woods. However, a knee injury steered her away from dance and toward acting. With her varied performances and Afro-Latin background and appearance, Velez's success is considered -- by fans and critics alike -- a breakthrough for Latina actresses who do not fit the stereotypical "Europeanized Hollywood" version of Latin females. As a result, Velez deservedly has a large multi-ethnic following. | CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Non-acting careers: Movies: I Like It Like That; City Hall; I Think I Do; Buscando un Sueño; Thicker Than Blood; Taino; Prince of Central Park; Serial TV Shows: "New York Undercover"; "Law & Order"; "The Pretender"; "Profiler"; "Oz"; "Dragnet"; Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"; "Medium"; "Numb3ers" Stage: Dreamgirls; Into the Woods; The Vagina Monologues; Facade; Intimate Apparel; Latinologues; The Little Flower of East Orange Big break: I Like It Like That, resulting in a 1994 Independent Spirit Award nomination and The Desi Award nomination Best known for: Her portrayal of Nina Moreno on the FOX drama, "New York Undercover" Awards: 1996 NCLR Bravo Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for "New York Undercover"; 1999 ALMA Award for Outstanding Actress on a Drama Series for Oz; 2007 Long Island International Film Expo's Best Supporting Actress for Serial (which is about a serial killer!); most recently won the 2007 National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications Award for Best Actress in a Drama for "Dexter" (NAMIC has celebrated cable programming that reflects multi-ethnic actors since 1980) To see all Dexter awards Click here Upcoming projects: |
