SLACK TIDE
Airdate: November 8, 2009
Directed by:Tim Hunter
Written by: Scott Buck

Dexter finds himself enjoying a brief moment of tranquility. He's finally managed to strike a balance between work, family... and other pursuits. But he's keenly aware that times like these aren't meant to last. When Miami Metro discovers a string of murders connected to a prominent photographer, Dexter sees an opportunity for a clean kill. However, his plans seem to be thwarted every step of the way. Quinn has taken a renewed interest in Dexter's nightlife. Dexter's plans to keep Astor and Cody distracted with new activities soon backfire. Even Harry disapproves of Dexter's choice of pastime, urging him instead to focus his efforts on the Trinity Killer. Meanwhile, Debra returns to work, frustrated to find everyone treating her with kid gloves. She decides to concentrate on her pursuit of the Trinity Killer as well as delving into her father's checkered past - investigations which Dexter fears might lead her to danger - or worse, the truth.

  • Dexter shares the definition of slack tide in the opening monologue: a slack tide is when the tide is neither coming in nor going out, but perfectly still. In relation to the episode, Dexter is experiencing a slack tide or sorts in his life. He believes that he's found a perfect balance between his private, work, and domestic life. However, much like how Dexter said in the beginning, "The only downside to the slack tide is that it doesn't last long", and Dexter's ends this episode when he finds he has killed an innocent man.

I think Deb and Quinn should have a fling. they def have tension. Quinn is caring for Deb, but can be a hard ass. Deb's boyfriend less this season. Her bfs are intersting, and it keeps her steady. After Anton, she becoming kinda dull, not her fault, but she needs more story than finding Trinity.

Um... in terms of actually dramatic content and overall development of the season's story, I'd say this was a good episode. However, in my opinion, this episode suffered from some poor dialogue writing and at least two instances on wonky editing.

I really don't like to knit-pick, but some of of the dialogue in this episode was not very good. Dexter convinces this woman that Quinn's a celebrity, and she approaches him and says, "So you must be Quinn". Is that how you approach a celebrity? Or what about Deb's meeting with one of Harry's CI's. Would any person ever say the things she said about Harry in front of that person's daughter. What I mean is, she said some pretty disgusting things about them sexually. She knows who Deb and is and that Harry's Deb. Would somebody ever really say that in that situation?

Other instances of poor dialogue include Dexter's scary story to the kids (or maybe that's just poor acting. Would that story really have kids on the literal edge of their seats like that?) and almost anytime the photographer spoke (especially to Deb).

But enough negative, the episode was good. Dexter killed his first innocent man (he did kill Oscar Prado before, but it sort of was in self-defense). How's he going to feel about this? Is he going to feel anything about this? I'm sure he will, although I don't think he necessarily should.

Quinn, do I see sheets of plastic in your future? Watch yourself. I liked you last season, don't ruin that for me alright?

And really Harry? You were a man-ho? I loved Harry to death (no pun intended) in season one, then he became a jerk in season two, and has sort of gotten progressively more jerkish as the series has continued. It's such a shame too because James Remar is such a fantastic actor.

And lastly, I'm still not convinced Trinity shot Deb and Lundy.

ok so the Sgt. & Lt. just break it off to remain in homocide ,,,,I'm glad they both remain but weak plot on relationship starting & ending in a shift, Quinn questions Dexter about why he kept his apartment? What is he so desperate to get one up on Dexter the guy that busted Quinn taking cash......Quinn asking Dexter what he's hiding or what kind of guy keeps his apartment why piss off the guy that holds dirt on you.....?? I can understand the plot to show social / parental lacking skills of Dexter's as a dad during his attempt to tell a scary story but was it that inappropriate or scary that the kids were so scared that the othe dad had to finish up the story? Are we sure he killed an innocent guy? Was it a quick out of charcter move by Dexter to kill he innocent or is he photographer lady player into some plastic....sloppy quick work is not Dexter's style? Trinity is emotional over a deer but is showing some agiatated behavior with and around Dexter/Kyle?....Harry's first rule supportd by all the other rules don't get caught is Trinity thnking that too and suspects Dexte/Kyle is a treat? I agree with MamiYamaguchi I am not convinced Trinty shot Deb & Lundy also I actually think dokes is still alive.....i can buy into Dexter learning the blending in skills from Trinity to teach him how to fit in but Trinity is unpredictable.....do we know or Dexter can be in for a surprise????
