The Dark Passenger

"True religion is real living;
living with all one's soul,
with all one's goodness
and righteousness."

Albert Einstein

Within all of our minds, there lies a place we rarely come in contact with. A dormant entity lurks throughout our thoughts and emotions quietly unnoticed - however, there are those of us who perceive this Passenger and learn to accept it as a part of ourselves. Dexter Morgan is one of these perceivers. He has come to accept the fact that he shares his mind with another. Over the years Deter has come to call this unknown entity his Dark Passenger. As in all things active, a hunger dwells within the Passenger. A hunger that drives its host to the near brink. It is only through the deeds of Dexter Morgan that this longing can be calmed, yet never filled. When the need to feed is at its extremes, the Passenger takes over. Heightened senses, a quick step, and a will to succeed are all traits that come when the Passenger takes control. Though we all have this darkness within, many of us will never stumble across it.

Mine is a teenager, a boy, and I'm a married woman. This boy is actually very similar to Dexter, but he is damaged by molestation and a parent's death. He hates romance and makes me do the craziest things. I won't tell what my Dark Passenger makes me do because I don't want to embarrass myself.
You go first!

If we all realized how alike we are, both good and evil and stopped hiding these thoughts from each other, we would all truly be free. And free to share, learn, and grow as a whole.

But then also, a show like Dexter wouldn’t be such great great entertainment.

It is very true that much--if not all--of humanity has a dark side. But the way each individual deals with it shows them as either virtuous or not. I have one that I try not to think about, but I don't tamp it down and try to pretend it doesn't exist. Many do. That is why we have so much real horror in the world! "We are not alone," most definitely! When you try to keep a lid on a boiling poy, it eventoually overflows and injures anyone near. Keeping the top loose releases the most pressure and saves a lot of pain. All in all, though, I don't think I could bring myself to convict Dexter if I were on a jury--if it is considered vigilante justice, so be it! ( And just think of all the money he's saved the state for trials and food and housing for these criminals! Taxpayers should be ecstatic!) It is surer and swifter than the courts of our land!

Morgaine The dichotomy creates unnecessary conflict 1 Nov 10 2007, 3:10 AM EST by TheDarkPassenger

Trying to divide the world into neat little categories like good and evil keeps us from being fully human. No one, not even Dexter, is all good or all evil. When we split our shadow off from the rest of us, the whole suffers.

Dexter actually does a good job of sublimating his compulsion to kill. He still kills, and enjoys it, but at least he's got that code that keeps him from killing randomly. I'm interested to see if the code continues to work for him now that he's finding out the truth about Harry and his mother. We shouldn't forget that Dexter has a bad imprint that isn't going away, and it isn't contingent upon whom he kills, only that he does kill and dismember someone. If he starts trying to repress that imprint, it will manifest in an unexpected and uncontrolled way.

We may find that Harry's Code is only a tool Dexter uses to ensure his own survival.

I keep my Dragon locked up in a cage. Being a functional Sociopath, I can relate very much to Dexter... When he describes how he sees others, I could relate down to the last minute detail... His lack of feelings, his being able to understand feelings, and his acting to fit into society...sometimes it doesn't work or you do the wrong thing... You have to watch others and act like them...the ultimate chameleon...
