Thoughts about "Something About Harry"

My heart was racing for the majority of the episode. it was great! It really made me think.

Let's get Deb out of the way. It was a slow week for her. Not much going on there.

The development with Rita was really good. It's great how he opened up about what happened to his father to her (although it did come off as a little insincere for me). It looks like they might go back to being non-sexually active too. Who knows? (I guess the writers do).

And can you believe that Harry killed himself!? I was really shocked by that. The writers have taken everything I loved about Harry's character (him being the only thing Dexter can truly rely on in the show) and have made him just as morally ambiguous as Dexter himself (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I didn't like how Harry began to look like a jerk in this season, and it continued through this episode, but the twist about him feeling guilty about what his son was doing could be redemptive in some people's eyes (I just wish he didn't need redeeming in the first place). And the fact that Dexter inadvertently killed Harry actually made me really sad. Our poor boy Dexter... things just don't seem to be getting any easier for him.

Speaking of poor boys, poor Doakes! He is a major jerk, and if I had to choose between Dex and him I'd choose Dex, but things Doakes said and his reaction to Dexter in the episode really made me feel sorry for him. Now more than ever, I hope there's a solution to this conflict that doesn't involve Doakes dying. He almost seemed believable with his cries that him and Dexter could work something out.

Lila's still a b**ch. Setting Angel up with date rape. What's she thinking!? Everyone loves Angel!

In all, this was a great episode, and I am sorry I ever doubted the writer's abilities in the beginning of the season. Previews for next week's look even more intense! Sunday is only 604,800 seconds away!

I know, it was heart-stopping action the whole way (including for me the scenes with Deb and Lundy!). I too wish that Doakes could just escape to Haiti or somewhere, and this could all somehow be pinned on Lila! As re: Dex and Rita, she was already calling him "baby" when she wanted to take it slow. Sometimes the need to comfort can lead to another need. What an episode! 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Another great episode for the series. Thought the ending was a bit week, but you really can't fault an episodes ending when it's just part of a grand story. Really enjoyed the insinuation in the preview that Doakes escapes the cage. Looks like things just continue to get more and more complicated for our twisted yet beloved hero. Looking forward to seeing how they decide to wrap it up, or for that matter, what cliff hanger they decide to use as a lead in for season 3. If only there were more Dexter's in the world, my how the crime rate would plumit... :) 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

I wish Dexter hadn't told Doakes he killed his father - that will kill Debra if it gets back to her. And Lundy is not convinced yet - that's not good.

Poor Angel - he should have listened to Dexter, but they never do. I've seen a lot of guys take that road, thinking about the sex and not considering the twisted mentality that comes with the package.

"
Deb has got to get her head out of her butt and quit being so needy and emotional. She keeps acting all bipolar like that and no one is gonna want her.

Rita you're my girl! You grab Dexter and claim him as yours, defend him to the end and give him a sloppy kiss. He needs it right now. *MUAH* "
Michael C. Hall is acting like he's possessed. How amazing he is in this part!
There were a lot of good lines in this episode.

About Deb - she's just being a girl. Let's not thow that "bipolar" label around lightly, ok? She's needy because her father neglected her because he had to deal with Dexter - not her fault. Girls obsess about every move a guy makes or every word he utters. She's actually being pretty assertive in asking for what she wants. I thought she was very articulate at the restaurant.

I still think it's a mistake to over-romanticize the relationship with Rita, though I will admit, I loved it when she called him baby. I hope Dexter is able to at least fake a little affection when he's not under a microscope, sporting a gun shot wound and worrying about a hostage.

That's the problem Deb - is being a girl, not a woman. One minute she all lovey dovey and the next she is throwing a tantrum.

I think Dex is extremely smitten with Rita as is she with him. The kids and her seem to be on his mind all the time now and Rita is just being cautious because her heart was broken by him. But when you do something you either do it 100% or don't do it. He has shown emotions in the last few episodes and his relationship with Rita is also helping him with that. But Rita has to get over that "take it slow" phase.

Next episode is gonna be a doosey with Lila pulling this date rape deal and the relationship is gonna be tested...again.

What a great episode!!

A lot happened, and a lot didn't happen .... which still leaves me wanting more!!! I can't believe there's only two more episodes left!

I'm glad Doakes is still alive though. If he has to go down for the murders, its better he does it alive. I started to feel so sorry for him in this last episode at the way the poor guy hasn't really done anything really to deserve being framed. But I just kept thinking to myself Dex can't go down otherwise there will be no hopes for a season three. I have no Idea what Dex is going to do with the Doakes story.

What was up with Lila and drugging herself? I thought she was going to Drug Angel and go do something to Rita, but what a spin... I have no idea what she is planning. Perhaps she is just falling apart. I've never liked her since she appeared in season 2.

We see a lot of Dexter's emotional side, which he never shows, but I could see that half the episode he did look troubled and had emotion written all over his face.

I felt sad that he feels responsible for Harry's Suicide. But Harry knew what he was getting himself into, and Dexter was just a boy when he started teaching Dexter the code. No wonder Harry felt that he could not live with himself after seeing what the code really meant. Dexter has been living by this code his whole life in order not to get caught, only to find out that Harry in the end did not agree with it, and could not live to see Dexter grow into a serial killer.

Dexter has been connecting to the people around him, emotionally, breaking the code here and there with Rita and the kids. He was only supposed to have a relationship to "fit in", but found himself discovering feelings and normal day to day personal interactions. This has lead him to doubt the code many times. Perhaps this will lead him to stop killing, once Doakes is framed, or perhaps wonder if he should turn himself in.

I believe Lila is drugging herself, and is going to claim that Angel drugged and raped her (she bought the date rape drug afterall). I think she just wants to get Dexter's attention anyway possible, and is probably going to blackmail Dexter (something along the lines of "If you promise to love me, I'll drop the charges on Angel" or something like that). As much as Dexter hates to admit it, he cares for people around him, even Angel, and wouldn't want to see them hurt.

I felt sad about Dexter's feeling responsible, but it makes me think less of Harry. Why did he have to go and take his own life? Why couldn't he have died dignified like a man? I could begin to imagine what Dexter might be "feeling", but I know my own beliefs were rattled by what was discovered about Harry.

Something has been really bothering me continuity wise about this episode. It says earlier in the series that Dexter's first kill was a nurse overdosing her patients. But here, Dexter kills someone before Harry is even in the hospital? Doesn't quite add up. Plus, I'm not sure that Harry killed himself at all. It wouldn't surprise me if Captain Matthews had some underhanded deal in all of this. After all, if he had killed Harry, he would want to cover it up as well. It doesn't seem to quite add up; just the way Cpt Matthews went about it all makes me think he has something to hide...

I think we were to assume those scenes took place in the year between Harry getting out of the hospital and his death (suicide). He was in the hospital for something heart related, and the flash backs mentioned him taking pills for his heart, and he even O.D.'d on them. I don't think the writers would overlook such a huge continuity problem. This pimp was one of his first kills, but not the first.

As for foul play with Matthews, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Harry killed himself. It's be almost too unbelievable if they revealed Matthews as some evil jerk bent on having power, other than just a plain jerk on bent on having power.

It's entirely possible Harry's death had nothing to do with Dexter, but that's irrelevant because Dexter thinks it was. Harry apparently left Dexter and Debra when they were in their teens. I wonder how they got along without him - it looked as if their mom was already gone. Maybe we'll get some more detail on the history with Deb and Dex. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

hmm good point. I did notice Lila looked completely annoyed by Angel when they were painting her loft. Poor Angel, he is a good guy. I don't think Lila realises that Dexter has already warned Angel that Lila would use him to get to Dexter. But still a sticky situation for Angel, Dexter will of course believe he wouldnt/didn't do something like that, but other police officers won't be so understanding without knowing Lila's background. As for the Miami police department, there isn't much faith left for the officers since the BHB is known to be one of them! Perhaps Dexter will have to Kill Lila before she goes to the police to report Angel for the Date rape! But then again thats against Dexter's code... Some sponsor she turned out to be!

Well this episode was great you cant say otherwise!
Dexter feeling guilty is a good thing, that makes him look more human and the characters become more credible. And the fact that Harry took sucide was almost logical, who the hell would support his son on cutting criminal into small pieces. I think that when he saw Dexter enjoying the killing he had second thoughs and said to himself "What was i thinking, i cant take the law into my own hands" something like that.
So Harry commiting sucide fitted in perfectly and that made Dexter feel guilty, which he should, cause lets face it, he is after all a freak. Okay he kills criminal but the worrying part is that he enjoys it.

I hope that in the 2 episodes that will come the following will happend:
- Doakes gets out free without any one suspecting him for being the Bay Harbor Butcher.
- Lila dies in the course of the action.
- Angel not in any trouble
- Dexter captured at the season finale by his own will because he realises the issues that he has.

With the fact of Dexter being captured, it will restore order and the story line will be credible, lets avoid making the same misstakes like prison break or heroes where you squize in an uncessary season just to make some money out of it.
This way Season 3 of Dexter, can be his few days before execution, we could get more insite on his past, character, we could see the way Debroah, Rita and her kids develops. And maybe another serial killer could come up where the police will need Dexters help who knows?!

Oh no I think that would be just awful. Why would anyone want Dexter to be caught? If it didn't end the series, it would put him in prison (like you want) and it would change the show entirely. The formula wouldn't be the same and it would probably be horrible. As for the story being more credible if he gets caught, I don't agree at all. What do you mean by credible? If you mean believable, I think it'd be more believable if he didn't get caught because there is no longer any evidence (except for the tool kit in his home) that directly sets Dexter up as the BHB. It's Doakes' word against Dexter's. Also, I just plain want as much "Dexter" as I can get before they decide to end the series.

The way they've set it up, and if you watch Deb's scenes carefully, I believe that in the end, Deb will kill Doakes before he has a chance to tell anyone anything.

People keep reiterating to her about "if you had a loved one, wouldnt you do anything for them? To protect them?" When Dexter has his FBI detail removed, she was upset and convinced that Doakes is a killer who hates him. I have a feeling after all she's been through, and she has yet to take a life that we've seen, Doakes will be the first person she has to shoot in the line of duty.

I think before Doakes has any chance of getting out the truth, Deb will shoot him, still believing that he's out to kill or harm Dexter. The Butcher will fall on him, and Lundy and crew will have to close the case as all other leads will dry up.

In this way, Dexter will not be directly responsible for Doakes' death, and it sets up the next season for Dexter to deal with his new emotions, while Deb takes a darker path, trying to deal with the fact that she killed someone, not just in the line of duty, because deep down she wanted to kill him, she convinced herself that she would HAVE to kill Doakes because he was a threat, because she wants to save Dexter, because she wants to be the cop her father never let her be, and to resolve her feelings of fear and helplessness she felt with the Ice Truck Killer.

It also sets dexter up to get back to business, further explore the mystery of his past and his father, and to analyze his 'code'.

at least thats what i think. I also think Lila will be Dexter's first kill to protect his loved ones, but that doesnt fit his code, a sign that everything he once new and held dear is breaking down. Without the code, once it's broken, Dexter will walk a precipice, between being a Dark Avenger.. and becoming a Monster.

at least thats what i think :)

Good analysis on Deb - it would make perfect sense, given what we've been shown, for her to kill Doakes in trying to protect Dexter. My question would be whether she knows about Dexter at the time of the shooting. I don't want Deb to find out but I'm preparing myself for that to happen in one of the next two episodes.
