What Jeff Lindsay thinks of Season Two
Dec 19 2007, 4:17 AM EST
I've been having this thought for a while now: I wonder what Jeff Lindsay thinks of season two of Dexter?I know he's praised season one and deeply approves, but now they've almost completely changed most of the characters from the novel (for better or for worse) and I was just curious to know if Jeff Lindsay approves. Would he even admit if he was dissatisfied? I've never met him, but I've thought of writing a fan letter and asking, but does anybody even do that anymore? Would he respond? If I had to predict what he'd say... I think he'd be happy with where the show is going. From interviews I've read and things I've watched, he seems really nice, and I know he gave Showtime full access to do whatever they want to his characters, so I guess he couldn't get mad at them. But I just can't help but think that the books are so much darker than the series that Jeff might think the series is becoming to soap-opera-y. I mean, in the books, Dexter still feels no real emotion (and in the third book postulates that he does not even WISH to feel them), and still hasn't really stated that he even likes Rita all that much (sure he likes the kids, but she's still just sort of his disguise). I imagine he might protest over what they did with Harry Morgan. In the books, Harry is Dexter's savior essentially and Dexter was always able to count on him for guidance, while in the series... well we all know he sort of becoming a jerk and then committed suicide like a pathetic jerk. 11 out of 12 found this valuable. i think in the series they were trying to more blatantly show how alone he was. he has some similarities to those he kills and that is one of his few human connections, but because of his adherence to harry's code he must murder the people he is the most truthful to. his brother being the obvious example. then they wanted him to grow as a character so they made him stronger with himself instead of just relying on a dead mans rules. just like every serial killer he must evolve or remain stagnant. i personally think all of the changes that they have made in the series were most artful...not to mention the whole evil force thing behind his dark passenger was beyond retarded.

Wow. I forgot that I even posted this. It's been so long.Yeah, I hear what you're saying. You've got some good points. I would agree with what you said, but do you think the series has strayed so far from the novels that Jeff Lindsay might even say it's gone too far? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I doubt Jeff Lindsay would disapprove, I think he'd understand that they might need to make some "drastic" changes, that plus the fact that they probably won't base much of the upcoming seasons on his book. I DO think it gnaws at him a bit, certainly annoys him but I think in the end he's ok with it.Of course this is all pure speculation, and he could just be planning a "playdate" with the show writers... lol Do you find this valuable? |

I read an interview not so long ago with Jeff Lindsay who said he is fine with the TV show taking a different direction from his books. I likes and is amazed by what the show has done - but taking a different path frees him up to continue to write his own version of Dexter's world - which means there will be more Dexter books.

I also read somewhere that he said that Hall has nailed the part of Dexter so beautifully and mentioned tongue in cheek if he needs inspiration for Dex he'll be going to Hall.

in season 2, when he goes through the **** with liala, it really shows much of a more human part of dexter, making it more relatable with most of the audiance, the fact that everyone can be good, even though they do bad things, exept that liala doesnt know the extent of dexters actions, but she still understands because shes an addict, and dexters dark passenger is very much like an addiction, he has a good heart and does feel for people (rita, deb, astir, etc..) but the fact that he hasnt felt much emotion throughout his whole life has blinded him from what emotion actually feels like, for instance, how is a blind person, whos always been blind his whole life supposed to know what green or blue looks like if someone explains it to them? they cant even fathom what a colour is, so explaining it to them verbally would be completely useless, so in dexters case, when he actually realizes he does feel emotions, it is conflicted to his history and mindset that "he feels no emotions" because he very well does, he just doesnt realize it, so when liala comes into his life and helps him accept who he is, and realize that hes just like everyone else exept for the fact that he kills bad people, which in his case, is his addiction, which makes him more relatable to most of society, we know everyone has flaws but in the world we accept people for who they are, and laila helped show him that, helped him feel normal. the show seems to downplay the actual implication of killing which allows the viewers to enter dexters mindstate.
