What will St Peter say when Dexter Shows up at the Gates of Heaven?
Mar 28 2008, 12:55 PM EDT
I have often wondered if the Code will actually be Dexters salvation. Dexter has this affliction, he can not hel himself that he is what he is. Since Dexter only kills those that need to be punished. Will he forgiven that he is or has killed. Does he get credit for the good stuff, or I should say he murders he has prevented? 9 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you?

Well if we're talking about the Christian God here, then the answer would definitely be Dexter's going to Hell. "Thou Shalt Not Kill" means "Thou Shalt Not Kill". It shouldn't matter why he does it, all the matters is that he does it and he's not suppose to. Another reason Dexter would go to hell is because he doesn't believe in God, and I think thats the most important rule for getting into Heaven. And I don't think Dexter kills these people because he feels they need punishing. He kills because its the way he was taught, and he's afraid to step outside the lines for fear he gets caught. And I believe motivations are more important than actions when concerning heaven. I mean, if somebody was trying to blow up a bus full of small children, and somehow accidentally saved somebody's life, and then he died, I think he'd still go to hell because he intended to kill the children, and although he wasn't successful and saved a life in turn, he'd still be a bastard in God's eyes. Conversely, if somebody was honestly trying to save a bus full of children from dying, and accidentally killed them instead, I think God would forgive them and let them in heaven. It was an honest accident and they meant the best, and are probably terribly sorry. So I think if Dexter did get to heaven, he'd still go to hell because he killed to satisfy a blood lust he had, not because he felt the people deserved to die. But I'm not preaching. I don't believe in any of that stuff myself anyway. I'm on Dexter's side about this one. No need to sweat the afterlife. 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

I really likedyour reply. It does answer some of my questions. But there still remains the problem I have with his reason for killing. He has no real choice in the matter. He was given this problem that he has to deal with. His desire to kill. He wrestles with this problem and he was never given the oprtunity to say he did not want this desire. It was dumped upon him.So if we use that old saying: If life gives you lemons - Make Lemon Aid. As i see it he was given his lemons as his psychopathy, and he has made the lemon aid by killing only the people that need to be killed. I do agree the first thing to get into heaven is to believe in God. I was taught that if you truely repented your sind you would be forgiven. This is where I had my problem with religeon is that I can go my whole life living God like, Not having anything because I was doing As Christ did. But some idiot business man that lied and cheated and lived with all of the money and things that money buy. One that did not live Christ like could at the last minute all of the sudden believe in God and be forgiven of his sin, and accepted into heaven just like one who lived a poor life and lived as close to Christ like as possible. So I think Dexter has a shot at it. If he believes in God. I too am not preaching, but it issomething I had on my mind for awhile. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Money does not make you happy but it helps!! Dexter has a chance of going to heaven if he truly repented and he stops killing and start living a normal life. But this is a show and we do not want him to stop killing the evil people. This man killed 4 adults and 2 children in Memphis. He did some evil things to these children and this community is hurting. I wished that Dexter was real in this case so he could make this person suffer like he did those 2 children. He tried to kill the other 3 and left them for dead but they survived and told the police that their uncle committed this horrendous crime. Please help me with this insanity about killing children.

( .....Money does not make you happy but it helps!! ......) What do you mean with this statement? I am not sure I understand the context to which it is used and you are refering it to be used? To me money is the root of all evil. A lot of bad things happen to people because of money. Dexter is not doing anything because of money. In fact I do not remember money being any sort of an issue in this series at all. Even Rita is not destitute, as a single mom. As for the rest of your blog I do agree. There are bad people out there, and do bad things to others. Would they do these bad things, or keep doing the bad things if they knew there was someone out there that will, 'get em', If they keep doing what they do? I do feel bad for you and your worry about people doing bad things to others, and especially to children. I am or was a Registered Nurse, I worked in a very busy Trauma Medical Center for a lot of years. I have been injured and can not continue to work any more. But to comiserate with you. My area of first love is the Recovery Room, Trauma and Pediatric Patients. So I have seen a number of bad things done to children. Those that did make it to the OR then would come through the Recovery Room, and I would witness how a person and a lot of times it is a lrelative can hurt children I hate it too. I can also tell you that a lot of it is related to drugs. Methamphetamine is the worst thing a person can do to them selves. BUT I have no sympathy for the users. They may be addicts, but there is treatment, and there is absolutley no excuse for not going into treatment. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

But I do find myself thinking about the characters on Dexter a lot, and don't know why. Is it because of my age (I may be a lot closer to meeting St. Peter than some others here!), recognition of the fragile nature of our lives in the first place? But, if it is humor you want- St Peter would ask one question that Dex must answer to be able to get in through the pearly gates. He might ask.. Where do all the female reindeer go while Santa and the male reindeer are out delivering presents? Of course the only answer that is correct is... They go into town and blow a few bucks! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think it just be the christian version since st peter is mentioned. I am a believer (but with nervousnes shout go dex go) I think for dex to go into heaven (based on the belief of the sect I attend at the time when I do attend. Bring a nurse puts a kink in church attendance) he would have to believe in god and jesus, believe that jesus dies for his sins and then accept his death for the coverage of his sins. Then he would have to sin no more, which we all sin daily no matter how hard we try, but that's what repentance is for. It would be a little hard to repent for a murder and then next week be back at the bed side on your knees Sincerly saying "well lord, I did it again" the Lord looks on mans heart and on judge ment day I think it would be better for Dex to be in ignorance and to have never know the lord, at least that way he could be judged for turning his compulsion into a good use, instead of knowing he should'nt do it for any reason and doing it any way. Of course I know that, but if someone messes with one of my kids, I could skin em alive and look st peter in the eye also. I'm glad I don't have to be the judge and also please take all my comments with a grain of salt. This is a very touchy subject but could be a good one. later ya'll 1 out of 1 found this valuable. elliemae71 - You sumed it up pretty well. Yes I dare anyone to go after my kids, even if they are wrong. I will not be very forgiving. But If they Were Wrong, I would have to say afterwards Oops!!This is sort of what prompted me to start this thread. I was watching a movie, I can not remember it as a lot of the mediocre ones run together anymore. But, it was a scene with the sequestered booth, and the sliding screen, and then the ever so well known 'Fogive Me Father for I have sinned', and the statement that follows was something about, 'forgive me for all of the people I have killed, and the one I am going to kill.' To say the least this person was playing both ends. He was still planning to do more. But if for some strange reason, he was caught and killed he was covered, and forgiven in advance. So now if Dex was to suddenly start to believe in God and Christ and the Holy Spirit. He can be absolved of all of his sins, and end up in heaven. He may want to if he believes in the after life and wants to join Harry Debra and Rita and her kids in the after life, now he can. I guess this all does come down to each one of our own belief in God and the after life. The importance of the afterlife to each one of us. I believe he actually can end up in the kingdom of God if he truely confesses his sins and wants forgiveness. But I think he will only want that if he and Rita are a real couple. We know he has a problem with relationships, and he may never do this if he does not feel comfortable with Rita and a long lasting relationship. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think Dex has a chance at getting in.I think if he maintains his code or the 'Code', and not sway from the fact that he was doing a public service. Then there maybe some leniency. (One can only Hope) I know it is an unpopular feeling that Dex does Murder people. It has been stated that Murder is wrong. So If he murders a murderer and for altruistic reason. I hope there is some wiggle room for him to be accepted. But I guess this is only important for those who believe in Life Ever after, and want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Personally I do believe. I do believe in this concept of Heaven and life ever after. I also have been told that there is a just and fair diety. So I think it is possible. Do you find this valuable? |

Well, first, the commandment is "thou shalt not murder" not "thou shalt not kill."However, this does not save Dexter. He murders... even though he murders murderers. If he only killed murderers (did not gain a benefit), then, he actually would not be in danger of that commandment. Kinda like it is okay for a soldier to kill in defense of a nation; the soldier derives nothing but protecting his family and community (or, an executioner who kills a murder in the matter of completing his duties). I would like to point out, though, that the Ten Commandments actually do not exactly apply to St. Peter. Jesus himself reduced the commandments to two: 1. Love God. 2. Love everyone like yourself. Thus, and here's where Rita may be the start of Dexter's salvation (or, really, Deb's the gateway person, Rita the mode): does Dexter love mankind? Can he? If so, all he really is short, is reconciliation with God after realizing his love for humanity. Protecting Rita from Paul was a first step; protecting Aster is a second, and, finally, the possibility of fatherhood is a third. This does not mean he has to stop killing; after all, he's already mastered the compulsion. THAT happened in the second season. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Well, first, the commandment is "thou shalt not murder" not "thou shalt not kill."Great post. However, even if Dexter loves mankind, he most certainly does not love God. He doesn't even believe in him (I think he's said that at least once a season). So if our infallible Dexter was wrong, and and there was a "great eye in the sky" watching the whole time, then Dexter would be forced to go to hell based simply on those commandments. "Great post.Very good point that he does not believe. But it is also stated that on judgement day. If you repent and truely repent for all of your sins you can be admitted to heaven. This is the point I was wondering. If a person lives a horrible life and then at the end he is truely repentant truely sorry for his sins. He can be allowed to sit with God. This is what was taught to me as a child. It has always bothered me as I try to live as a Good Person. I do not call people names, I do not think bad things of others, I do not tattle on others I try to live a decent life. I try to get along with others. I can see a person who was brought up without God in thier life suddenly finding God. I feel they have some wiggle room so to speak of being allowed. If they had not experienced formal religeon earlier in life. Then after finding God they can be truely prentant and they can have a second chance. But there are some who are so self centered, and so unchristian that can go to church daily and still not be christian. I do not see how they can be allowed. So if Dexter does find God and is repentant Can he or should he be allowed in to Heaven? I think it is possible. But like you say He has made a number of comments about that. I am sure he does not believe. I see him as a good person though. I can see him as a careing person. But if it was not for that Murder thing he could be allowed. But the Murder thing is like a negative but he is also taking out a negative So in this case maybe 2 negatives can make a positive. Do you find this valuable? |
