About Rita

I haven't really started watching the show yet but I think I'm going to. Right now I'm just gathering information on all the characters since I'm starting so late in the season.

Anyway, my question is: is Rita Bennett named after the Rita Bennett in Stephen King's "The Stand?" In "The Stand," Rita was a pill-popping, nervous, helpless, and extremely broken woman that couldn't survive unless someone else was taking care of her, and she ended up OD'ing. When I saw the Dexter character's name and her personality, the question wouldn't let me go until I asked it.

In "The Stand" her name was Rita Blakemoor, I believe. I'm not sure if Rita from Dexter is a reference to her or not. I don't think so. Rita is damaged, but she seems to try to be strong, often trying not to have Dexter be involved her her problems. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

No Not at all.
She was never a pill popper. She was helpless, and broken.
Rita is turning into a strong woman, But she had been beaten down by an abusive husband. She is at a time when she is growing into a strong individual. Dexter is helping by providing support for her and giving her the ( I want to say Love - But Dexter does not know how to love He is growing too ) affection and companionship she needs. Now she is getting stronger.
Now Dexter was attracted to her at first because she was not very strong, He called her broken. But she did not make any demands on him especially emotional demands He is not able to love, but is able to be a companion, He only wanted something to look like a relationship. He was not into sex, and could not feel any emotional attachment to anything. Emotionally he is dead.
