Rita is a key character
Nov 10 2008, 12:46 PM EST
RITA IS NOT ANNOYING! The series has been built and progressed on three solid fronts. ONE: Dexter and his hunts. TWO: Dexter and his day job. THREE: Dexter and his private time away from the other two. Rita and her kids along with Dexter's relationship with them is truly one-third of the show. Not in screen time to be sure but it is a big part of Dexter's life and all three play off of each other. He is striving to appear normal and it takes an effort for him to do this, it does not come naturally. Dexter is Dexter for all the reasons we already know and his life is as complicated as anyone else's and its that complication factor that makes him very interesting to watch. If one of these three parts of the show were to go away then the series would suffer! Rita is not meant to be anything other that his girlfriend and now the mother of his child, leading to their wedding. It's called family! Too many people keep saying Rita is this or that when her character is just as important to Dexter as the other parts of his life. Do you find this valuable? |

Rita is as essential to the show as marshmallows are to hot chocolate. At least for me. Rita is the glue that keeps Dexter's normal appearance together. Do you find this valuable? |

Mike for as long as I've been seeing you posting on the wiki, you've always been posting on the virtues of Rita and all her wonders. I wish you find (or have found) a woman as pretty as Julie Benz and twice as sweet as Rita. Now if anyone kept tabs on me through the second season the boards, they'd know I was ALL ABOUT Rita in season two, at least when compared to Lila. God how I hated that woman. Dexter needs Rita and I hope she never leaves the show. However I will say that she is sort of boring me this season. I guess there's no fault of hers that I feel that way, its just that she's been relegated to passenger seat to Miguel this season in terms of Dexter's attention. All I want to see is what Dexter's doing with Miguel and how he's coping with becoming a papa, and then when they cut to Rita, I get a little frustrated. "I don't care what you and Syl are doing Rita. I want to watch Dexter kill this guy". Speaking of Syl, that relationship feels a little forced to me. I haven't seen them bond over anything or give me any indication that they'd be friends. What do they have in common besides blood-thirsty husbands? I just don't FEEL any friendly-chemistry between them? Does that make sense? Don't misconstrue, I do like Rita and I hope her and Dexter do get married. I don't want you to think my growing boredom with her means I don't like her. Rita will come back into the spotlight someday, and in a big way. Do you find this valuable? |

Instead of including her in interesting Dexter subplots, she's being susie homemaker and chumming with Syl. That's gonna get old. We love to argue back and forth on whether Dexter has a romantic or loving capacity--- but either way, his interactions with Rita are fascinating. Fake or not. I don't want to see them shoving Rita off because they can't use her. They can always use her. Her purpose is wrapped in Dexter. Not stupid wives of other secondary characters. She provides some of the best insight we ever get into Dexter. She holds it all together. Do you find this valuable? |

And my favourite after Dexter, is a essential part in Dexter´s life. Do you find this valuable? |

Rita is a vital part of Dex's life and the storyline, but she doesn't get as involved as much as she was in previous seasons. Maybe they're more trusting of each other at this point, but it seemed like throughout season 2 especially , she was always calling or showing up unexpectedly. I would think that, even with the pregnancy and wedding, not having a day job would mean she'd have more time to keep tabs on Dexter. I mean she blatantly assumed Miguel was having an affair, so that would mean she should question where Dex is when he says he's with Prado, right??I don't mind the scenes with her, but they do tend to drag out a bit more this season when we could be watching Dex plan his next move. I think the Syl relationship is based a lot on when they first met... Rita seems apprehensive about the pregnancy, and Syl talks about how her and Miguel want a child. Between the time they've spent together house hunting and then the trip to the hospital, I would imagine they've built a strong friendship. Plus this season is the first time we see much of Rita without Dexter in every scene. Do you find this valuable? |

All very good posts here. Rita being pregnant is the biggest single change to Dexter's life since his mother's murder. Dexter being a father is unique for him, this is the first time. The show should use that to explore Dexter's inner thoughts and feelings, as much as Dexter can feel at this point. If the writers don't play this to its fullest then they are missing a great opportunity. The scenes with Dexter and Rita and or Deb concerning the baby don't have to be long but they need to be there! With Angel too, especially since they are planning the wedding. Angel loves his little daughter so much that he should be all over Dexter about the baby. Where’s Vince with his classic uncalled for remarks? I’m not saying this has to overpower the show but it should be a key part in Dexter’s self analysis. And yes, ZizzyB23, I am a big Julie Benz fan and a Rita Bennett Defender! Just me! Think anyone else has noticed? LOL! Do you find this valuable? |

They did in epsidoes 2 and 3, but it's kind of been forgotten again. It's like he's forgotten that the baby exists (or he's in denial... which would kind of explain things...) Maybe things will change when Rita gets more obviously pregnant (which probalby isn't going to happen this season). Do you find this valuable? |

Julie Benz is certainly one of the most charming actresses on TV. The whole cast is really unique. Most shows reach too far and end up seeming extremely disconnected. I'm sorry to any fans out there-- but Grey's Anatomy is absolute rubbish and a great example of a show that reaches too far. Once every doctor started hooking up, I turned the channel. Thank God for DEXTER and old Arrested Development episodes :-)I also love the name choices on this show... RITA? DEB? I'm pretty sure those are aunt names but it's awesome and hilarious. Rita... haha. Do you find this valuable? |

I don't think Rita's character is boring this season. If anything I think she has become a much stronger and more independent woman since the whole Lila mishap. She wouldn't marry Dexter right away and she made it clear to him that he could leave her to raise the baby alone. Also, she cursed out that bitchy girl at the hotel. Go Rita!
