Season 3 Writing Issues
Nov 26 2008, 3:49 PM EST
Please, please, enough on the nose dialogue. If I hear another plot point reiterated in plain language, well, I'll still keep watching. Also, in Episode 4(or 5?)...I know Dex was in a bad mood because he hadn't killed in a while, but did he really have to be mean to Rita in the 'No' scene? It was inconsistent, he knows better. The preceding scene, where he asked her and the kids to marry him, was transcendent and quite convincing. He doesn't feel, but he knows how not to be rude. If he was going to have problems being rude in his normal life, it should have been written into the first two seasons. It hurt to watch, it inflicted pain on the viewer, but without enough justification. Rita is the everyman, she is the audience, we are rooting for her more than for Dexter or anyone else. When and how she gets hurt is going to be the true tragedy, the real art, of the rest of the show, no matter what happens with Miguel or Deb. So when Dexter hurts her feelings, it shouldn't be cheap or his character will thin out. That's how, in the end, I'm going to decide if this show is pulp or lit. Otherwise, I'd like to tell the crew 'Bravo' for seasons 1 and 2, I was immensely entertained. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

It the writers want to get her involved in a plot thread where something is happening other than a family matter it would be great but not at the expense of loosing the character or any of the kids. Unless I have two episodes mixed up, I believe it was tied in to the theme of that episode... Dex was realizing all of a sudden he was losing his freedom - his apartment, his free time, etc. It seems like they wanted to portray his more stubborn\childish side. He was realizing he was being forced to give up certain aspects of his life he hadn't planned on.Aside from the "no" scene, during the dream sequence when Harry explains he has to give up his things, he says (in a rather whiny voice I thought) 'But they're MINE!". He also stuck to his stubbornness when he said he'll make time for Rita and The Dark Passenger. It all seemed to just build up smoothly to him realizing what an ass he was being to Rita over the pregnancy and marriage. It may have been awkward to watch him and Rita argue, but I feel it was necessary for that to happen for Dex to appreciate having her in his life. Come to think of it, I believe the proposal and the "no" scene were two separate episodes now from what I remember... the proposal was the one where he sets up Ramon with the fake tipster; the "no" episode was the next one when he was on the cruise and Rita went to the hospital. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. "Maybe Rita isn't the angel you think she is"If she's not the writers will have to spring a total surprise on us! I can only guess that she will take out Miguel if she's around and Miguel freaks out at her or the kids, or maybe Sylvia. If that is the case then, "GO RITA!" Do you find this valuable? |

She is on Syl's side and was calling Miguel an idiot because he was ruining it with Syl.She has obviously developed a bond with Syl and in some way may confront Miguel when he is doing a dirty deed or trying to harm Dexter. sorry this isn't to in depth as im trying to eat at the same time! He was realizing he was being forced to give up certain aspects of his life he hadn't planned on.Exactly. People seem to be forgetting here that: 1. Dexter doesn't actually love Rita, or at least, he doesn't think he does (remember all the "this is all pretence" talk in the last episode?). 2. He doesn't have a natural empathy for how she is feeling, although he's getting better at it, so he wouldn't really know that saying 'no' so abruptly would upset or. (Or, because he doesn't love her, he knows but doesn't care.) 3. He'd suddenly realised what the hell he was getting himself into with the whole marriage thing, which I don't think he'd really considered when he proposed. 4. He's still really quite awkward at blurting things out instead of saying things more subtly. He's done it heaps throughout this season, including the time when he's trying to tell himself to break the news gently to Miguel about not killing Ellen, but instead he just blurts out "we can't kill her". Diplomacy isn't always Dexter's greatest skill when he's personally involved with something. And you're right, this scene was in the following episode to the proposal, and I think it is set at least a few days later. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |
