"I would suggest that even though Dexter cannot experience natural feelings of resonance or empathy, what he can realize is the value he places on innocence, which up until this point, is what Rita has in abundance. If Rita were suddenly to become less than innocent, she would be lessened in his eyes, which would start the process of devaluation. This is the reason children are such sympathetic creatures to Dexter - they are totally innocent. What Rita represents, i.e., normalcy, is grounding to Dexter's narcissism. With Rita, he appears completely normal. That's a little more that 2 cents! Eye opening, if that was the case, that Dexter let the teen go because he FELT empathy towards him. Another human emotion. (I hadn't thought about that one.) A Damien child would be interesting. would make for a lot of speculation. Does Dex kill him and prevent others to be hurt or killed by him? Or, if Damien is recieving therapy, does Dex let him live? Does he give him a second chance at life ... one that he might feel neither he nor Brian had? About Rita, if Dex sees her not so sweet, it might ignite some passion within him. He might be turned on by her wicked side, the same way some women are turned on by bad boys. Who knows? "A Damien child would be interesting. would make for a lot of speculation. Does Dex kill him and prevent others to be hurt or killed by him?Hi! Yes, I'm kind of torn about the Damien child (I know, I brought it up - just thinking about plot twists, new story lines, etc). First of all (and this is only a technical issue) is the question I have about letting children play these kinds of parts.... But putting that aside, on the one hand, in our society there is a big push toward punishing children as adults when they commit murder. Dexter wouldn't kill a child, but what if the situation was so outrageous that even he would see children in a different light. In Dexter's logic the administration of justice by death makes perfect sense - a win win for him, because he gets to kill, and for "the people" on whose behalf he kills. On the other hand, it's hard to administer the ultimate punishment on a child who has been damaged and may be acting in the only way that in their limited experience and intelligence dictates. It brings to mind the saying "hurt people hurt people". Anyway, I was thinking about a child who has no reason to be bad - they just are. Like a genetic mistake. A child about whom Dexter could work out these kinds of ethical questions. As far as Rita goes, I still believe it would be a mistake to "poison the well" so to speak. Lila was a bad girl and really turned Dexter on. But Dexter always ends up having trouble with people who see the real him. First with his father, then his brother, then Lila, and now Miguel. It would be terrible if Deb suddenly began to doubt Dexter's goodness. This complete blind loyalty Deb has in Dexter protects her from him. I just think as long as Rita is perfect, and she herself never sees Dexter outside the illusion he has created, she will be a foundation from which he can maintain a mostly functional, pro-society lifestyle.
