20. RE: Does the general viewer not like Rita?

"I'm just wondering. Opinions of her seem to have tarnished during this season. I'm still digging her involvment so am I missing something? I don't get what she's doing wrong or differently. I think she's been largely misused in the season but mostly because Miguel has been such a force to be reckoned with. This show isn't called RITA afterall. If anything, she's nowhere to be found in most episodes. Anything that might be strange about Rita this year would be the fault of the writers. But I still don't see it.... so yay or nay on Rita as a character?"I've tried to like her, really, I have. For Dexter's sake, I've tried. I can't. She talks like a not very bright little girl. I hate girly voices in grown women. Her character is whiny and passive aggressive. She broke up with Dexter BEFORE he screwed Lila, and still made him pay a high price for it. I can't stand her broodiness (I know, she's supposed to be pregnant, and pregnant women do get broody. Still.) I can't stand the way she just assumed she knew that Miguel was having an affair, that Dexter was protecting him, and that she had a right to tell Syl. Mostly though, I can't stand the noises she makes when they screw. Bleaggghhh! (I am taking the medication now, so I may get over this.) 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Maybe I hang around with too many women but Rita is extremely patient and mild around Dexter. And she's not in the show enough to be a big bother. But I guess I also don't see the whining that others see. Like I said, too much experience with REAL whiney women. I didn't see Dexter pay a high price for his affair with Lila. It was quite the opposite. Rita was OVERLY forgiving. Considering that Rita thinks she's in a real relationship, Dexter really got off easy. Different strokes for different folks. Her growth through the 3 seasons is fantastic considering how abused she was by Paul. When she stands up for herself and her kids she shows strength. That is not being whiny. She’s a woman and her voice sounds like she’s a woman. She’s Dexter’s mate by his choice. The baby will not keep Dexter trapped at home. It will add to the challenges that Dexter faces daily to appear to be normal and still satisfy the dark passenger. Rita is a great character in the show. That’s my 2 cents plus a few quarters, at least! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Someone is going through my posts and marking them not valuable. If I have offended anyone I apologize. I am not trying to make light of Julie Benz or her character Rita. I am one of her biggest fans and proud of it. My posts do get a bit off topic with the puns and such but it is all in fun, that's they are intended in any case.It might be Dexter himself!!! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"He was truthful in the fact that he had an addiction, but led her to believe it was to drugs. I don't think that she ever found out any differently. She made him go to meetings or she was gonna break up with him. Then he ended up using those as a cover for Doakes. And, met Lila."I don't think Rita ever found out that Dex misleading her about his addiction. She told Sylvia the other day that Dexter used drugs. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

The thought Dexter had was his need to fill the void which she obviously does not know about. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

What was that business with the house-hunting if not manipulative, and indirect? I actually thing the actress is wonderful. I just don't care much for the character. I think it's an excellent notion to have a person who helps Dexter become more "human." It makes for good drama. I don't care for Rita's baby voice. When she talks with passion about her kids, or that talking to she gave Miguel, she doesn't talk in the baby girl voice. I like her then. Maybe once she's out of the early pregnancy stage, she'll be less kvetchy and girly, more strong. I look forward to that. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Deb set Dexter straight on that one, about the ring. Rita was not whiny or passive aggressive, she's pregnant. I wish someone could come up a different Rita diss than whiny, it's not original and copied over and over again. Her voice is her voice. Why is that even an issue? I respect your opinion but I don't agree with it. Now it's your turn to let me know yout thoughts. By the way I am a big Julie fan too. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I can't believe the finale is here and Rita's probably logged about 5 minutes total in the entire season. One whole season set back for her because I guess Deb and Anton were more important. I'm sorry for Deb fans but she's finally getting to me. Enough with Anton. Okay that's all. It just stinks because certain people were overdeveloped and others were underdeveloped. Rita and the kids should have been a huge part of the season. It seems like the kids have been strangely absent this year. Rita too. If this show only goes to 5 seasons, they are going to have to pick up the pace a little here. And really start balancing the cast out more. There should be time for all characters. That's my rant. How much you wanna bet Rita will still be in her first trimester next season? I want to see this baby and still have time for aftermath and stuff. At this pace, Rita will be giving birth by early season 5. It seems like these types of show last 5 or 6 years tops.

"Maybe it will all be about Rita on the wedding day as it is the BRIDES day after all?I'm definitely not holding my breath. Seems like the drama will be pretty constant. Of course, you'd think the whole Lila/Doaks thing would have taken forever but it didn't. There is some hope. I know Rita's not the main character but she deserves a decent wedding episode. I don't want to see the wedding at the very end either but that will likely be the case. Not a good time to be a Rita fan. Do you find this valuable? |

I think Julie is smoking hot and a great actress. I feel besides Dexter Rita and Debrara are the two most important characters to the show. If any character had me displeased it would have been Miguel. Now I love his character but when I heard he was joining the cast I was hesitant to say the least. But I dig Rita all the way baby!

Why is that even an issue?Mike, I hope you will take the following in the spirit in which I intend it; that is, in a spirit of cordial disagreement. I am a woman. It is bizarre, to say the least, to be "instructed" in the ways of women by a man (e.g., "Women can be mysterious. They think one way and act out another.") You like Rita, the character and Julie Benz, the actress. I like Julie Benz a lot! I don't like Rita. Before Rita was pregnant, she "acted out" (to use your phrasing) in ways that can arguably be described as passive aggressive. I've never been a fan of that style dealing with other people. I KNOW it's a part of the character, who is a fiction after all. I just don't like it. I want Rita and Dexter to work as a couple. It makes the show that much more textured and interesting. I just want Rita to develop (!) away from her current persona, which gets under my skin like a burrowing worm. As to her voice being her voice, the tone and timbre and pitch vary when she is putting her mother in her place; when she is telling off Miguel, etc. When she talks in that baby girl voice, she sounds less mature than Astor. Aside: I know quite a number of women who love the show and (to put it mildly) don't care for Rita. Our reasons vary, but there it is. Do you find this valuable? |

I’m not instructing you on how to be a woman, I’m not qualified. From my point of view men and women think differently about certain things therefore they are mysterious, at times. This is my opinion. I hope that through the next two seasons that the writers will give Rita more screen time and allow her to become a stronger and more self confident woman but with the sweet qualities that Rita has had from the beginning. You are right about the passive aggressive, good points. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
