"I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think you quite understand what the term "jump the shark" is supposed to mean.

A show doesn't jump the shark just because it isn't as good as it used to be (and I would agree with you that season 3 wasn't as good as seasons 1 and 2).

A show jumps the shark when it resorts to something absurd or gimmicky that doesn't fit with the concept of the show or goes against its basic premise.

Dexter's evolution - wanted or unwanted, faking or not - into a family man can be easiliy justified within the premise of the show.

Dexter is not (just) a show about a serial killer. It is a show about how a serial killer manages to hide his secret and pretend to be normal. How (or if) Dexter fakes human emotions, how (or if) he fakes human relationships to help preseve his secret - they are all essential parts of the show.

Yes - having characters marry or have babies has been considered shark jumping in previous shows. But that doesn't mean that every show that does so must be jumping the shark. The ones where you can call JTS are when it doesn't make sense that the two characters would marry or have a baby, or marriage destroys sexual tension that was always intended to be unresolved, or the baby is introduced to amp up the 'cute' factor, or the actress playing a character gets pregnant.

I for one predict that it's Dexter's becoming more human, including by having a family, that will eventually bring about his downfall. Taking more risks, revealing too much to Deb which leads her to trace his family history, perhaps even putting himself and his family in danger - I believe they'll all be part of the net that eventually closes in. "I think that they should stray away from the serial killers every season so as to not make the show unrealistic. However, they should have an unidentified body show up with no finger tips or teeth so it`s almost impossible to figure out who it is, how they died and why!!!
