They usually don't tie in the seasons a lot. I actually thought they did a good job with the first episode. The sarcasm alone was great, and we already have Dex in a huge mess, Lundy is back, plus we get the introduction to a new serial killer right off the bat. All in all I think they started off the season well. I wasn't disappointed.

I don't mind the cleavage between seasons on this show. It's in fact very tidy and neat that Dexter "disposes" of one big nasty serial killer each season. On season 1 we had the Ice Truck Killer, on season 2 we had the Bay Harbor Butcher, on season 3 we had the Skinner and now on season 4 we have this maybe Trinity Killer guy, all as major plot arches tidily cleaned up at the end of each season.

The huge story arches about each of the main characters are transposed between seasons very well, though. Dexter is still juggling his daytime, nighttime and family time "jobs", now with a baby son and getting away with everything everytime, Debra is still the detective investigating her father's past life, Masuka is still the major perv, Batista is still the good-hearted guy looking for love, Rita is still the role model mother, and so on and so on. So, all fine with me.

About the season 4 premiere itself, I thought there were precious moments, like Dexter getting dressed apparently just like the intro sequence, but looking all sleepy instead, and the ending cliffhanger, almost more suitable even for a season end, not an episode end. So, I liked it more than enough.

BTW, it's my first post ever here. I've passionately watched this show from the start, but only now did I start to lurk here and decided to join.
Sorry for the (too) long post.

Yeah, the "previously on Dexter" part was really helpful for me. It's been too many months of an hiatus. It's a sign that there ARE ties with the previous seasons.

I thought the introduction of Lithgow's character was great. Just the right amount of creepy and twisted. Plus they established that Dexter has so much going on that he will be off balance all season so it should get pretty tense. I wouldn't be shocked if Deb or Rita live in a previous victim's dwelling. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

The new Trinity Killer guy was mysterious, evil and menacing enough. Just a little too little clothes for my taste, like I said on another thread. I suspect it may be all part of the way they want to build the character, though, so... oh, well... I'll live with it.

As for Dexter's overwhelming "chores" now, I'm expecting to see him grow into them, adapt and adjust, and be back in balance after a while throughout the season. It will be a huge part of his growth as a character, just like it would be if he were a real life person.

Welcome aboard Losa78! Good posts. I liked the opener big time. So many things happened, 2 killings, not counting the vacationer, 1 car accident, the newly weds new place, baby Harrison is here, Angel is sleeping with his boss, Lundy is back, the Trinity Killer is a great addition and a real challenge for Dexter. One of the driving scenes was so similar to the first episode in season 1. The music is better this year. This episode was better than I could have imagined. JMHO…… 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Just feel that there was on tie to his hand and the prado family even with the passage of time is the family were that close they would still have a connection and the ending was so explosive I still say it could have been a better transition even if it were reflective conversations,, I feel that thing are going to slow down and yet the guest actor has all ways been a favorite of mine...That is why i will still watch...

Are you kidding me? Not the best? The introduction of John Lithgow as the new serial killer is worth the Showtime subscription cost alone. With Lundy back in the picture, Dexter has to be on his toes more than ever.

The tie from last season to this is Dexter's new family. The baby presents another hurdle for Dexter to jump in order to satisfy his dark passenger each week. I'm on the edge of my seat and looking forward to the next episode before the one I'm watching is over.

Dexter is hands down the best serial on TV.

You know another way to look at it is Dexter killed seasons 1-3...

1 brother, 2 co workers(3 if you count by extension Ellen killed by Prado), an exgirlfriend and a few loser criminals and a pedaphile. How many of those close to him will die before the lime light strikes him?
