Is anyone else starting to hate Rita in a major way?
Oct 8 2009, 2:16 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 8 2009, 2:16 PM EDT
I used to be sort of neutral on her, but she has really turned into a lazy, whinny, self centered tyrannical cow.
She no longer seems to be working. At least if she does she obviously doesn't have to wake up in the morning. After Dexter is up at night taking care of the baby we see him going off to work and her staying home with the kids. So it is his income alone that she is using to buy the beautiful new house, and the awful new pink dresses. Ok. so you would think that she would realize that as Dexter's income is important and he should be allowed to get maybe 4hrs sleep a night? Especially as she can always take a nap? But no. After seeing her husbands wrecked car she doesn't think, Oh my, I need to take better care of him? She thinks as usual only of herself and her kids. I don't think she even realized that the world is a large place, and there are more important things in the world then babies, cookies, and marital fidelity. So when Dexter comes home that night after being in the hospital, his head touches the pillow, the baby makes a wretched sounding wail. And what does Rita do? Nothing. She doesn't even move. She just keeps on snoring. Dexter can get it. So much for her self sufficient single parenting!! If that wasn't bad enough she says things like ""No" doesn't work in a relationship". Meaning Dexter saying "no" doesn't work in a relationship. Meaning doing what she says is what works? Interesting. And when Astor asks for the ipod, Dexter seems to think its OK to get her one. But Rita says "Thats not how we do things in this family". Meaning they do things the way she says? By her rules? Ok, Dexer loves being constantly able to save a woman and her kids. That fits. He doesn't want to disappoint her and the kids. But no one will sell the idea that he likes spending time with her. I know I don't enjoy spending time with her on screen.

Lollipopfop, you double posted this view of yours both here and on the "Dexter and Rita relatioship" thread, but I'm just gonna reply here. I like shiny new threads.

I think calling Rita a "lazy, whinny, self centered tyrannical cow" is just a little too... wow... over the top. All that hate is bad for you.

I agree Rita doesn't seem to have a job and, for what we have seen so far, she hardly or at all minds the baby during the night. Still, at least during the day, she cares very much for her sons and she loves Dexter with all her heart. Also, who knows, maybe Rita has a heavier sleep. She told Dexter he could wake her up if he has a heavy day.

I for one appreciate and value domestic and house work and taking care of the kids, as a role historically attributed to the traditional housewife, but which gets less and less appreciated these days. Taking good and tidy care of a house and three kids can also be seen as a full time job. Dexter goes to his job to make a living, but thanks to Rita, he has a nice and tidy home to come to, his meals are cooked for him and his kids are sought after without having to hire and pay a maid or a babysitter.

As for Astor's Ipod, well, technically Astor is Rita's, not Dexter's daughter. Dexter is only the stepfather and not really blood family, so I accept Rita's attitude as taking a clear lead on Astor and Cody's education. And I also agree with her option of not buying the Ipod until Astor does her chores straight, obeys about the music and earns it.

Finally as for Dexter enjoying spending time with Rita, well, the fact is his feelings for her were never too clear for me. At the start, Dexter wanted to keep appearances and give the illusion of a normal life. Then, I think it grew to something more and now I think Dexter actually has feelings for Rita and the kids. Call it love if you will, or not. I dunno...

Lollopopfop, didn't you already post this in another thread? Isn't hate way too strong and like Losa said, it is not good for you nor healthy in any way.

I already responded to the other parts of your posts in the other thread so read them there.

If I need to go potty when the show Dexter is on, I now go when it is a "Rita" scene. Otherwise, you are spot on Lollipoptop.

Love your name lollipoptop. Fun to say!

Losa78 I love how you call it a "benefit" to Dexter that Rita looks after "his" kids. But that Dexter should have no say in how "his" kids are raised or what goes on in the home he paid for. So which is it? Or should he treat them like his kids when it comes time to pay the bills, and at other times he is only the step dad?
Also, his home was always clean. He doesn't even like the house in the suburbs. So how is it worth anything to give a man a life he hates?
What Dexter feels for Rita is pity. He likes taking care of a mother with kids, that makes sense. But its not right for Rita to exploit the fact that Dexter won't stand up to her.
The last episode had the scene where Rita is driving Dexter to work, despite protests. Like he is too dumb to make the choice. Then she refuses to accommodate him by stopping for coffee? And sings "Karma Chameleon" on the top of her lungs? How much more rude can you get? The thing that makes it not so funny is that she is purposefully creating a world where she can exploit him. Its not random. She is a controlling, lazy *****. And your concern for my anger is touching. I imagine you are a housewife.

Do what you want. I thought it made more sense to remove this to its own topic. And again..relax about my well being.

Meh.. You are right to dislike Rita these days... It's what the writers mean. They want the conflict and the obstacle to Dexter there. I'm starting to dislike Rita myself, specially after the latest episode, even though I don't wanna go as far as calling her controlling, a b i t c h, or a lazy, whinny, self centered, tyrannical cow. That's too over the top.

Still, me, a housewife???!!! MWAHAHAHAHA! See my profile page...

And I don't agree Dexter feels pity for Rita. At first he just felt the need to blend in and appear to have a normal life. It has now grown into some sort of affection mixed with the need to stick to his facade. I don't see pity at all.

Actually, I think the relationship was originally based on Rita needing Dexter. He wanted to protect her from Paul and sooth her woes and I think he did see her as inept. But now he sees her as "a puppy that grew up to eat your couch"

That is really weird...
Don't see how it can really happen outside of a ban scenario. Could something be wrong with your internet connection?

I find it funny and comforting that I can google "I hate Rita on Dexter" and tons of message boards spouting the same thing pop up. I really really really don't like her. I mean, I really don't like her. She ruins everything, she is all that everyone says she is, annoying, selfish, whiny, manipulative (when she got pregnant), self-centred, and just all around a person/character I truly dislike. Whether that was the intention of the writers or not, I seriously want her killed off. Now, her little daughter is following along nicely (season 4) in her footsteps. Kill her!!!! I know Dexter needs to fit in but crap, couldn't he have picked someone less annoying and selfish?! and she is so NEEDY. She gives women a bad name! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Nothing seems to get this crowd buzzing quite like Rita. Are you sure you don't want her on the show? What would you talk about? Like her or not, it would be mighty quiet on the homestretch without her. I can't imagine that you guys really wanna see smooth sailing for Dexter at home. It's another goal for him to achieve. I have to say that my view on the Rita character is that she definately isn't the person she started out as! First, she was a slight and meager, soft spoken, formally abused single mother. Then she morphs into a nasty, hateful, selfish person with the picturesque life. Sorry, but the whole transformation is unbeilevable and nerve-wracking. I liked the idea of a girlfriend he could share the adventures with, that he would eventually become at odds with. Not to be tied down with a nag and a baby! I promise there are plenty of other things worth watching, than Rita. Her presence on the show has made it hard to watch, the decline of the Dexter that I was so drawn to watch in the first place is gone!! Even with her gone, that wouldn't guarantee "smooth sailing" by any means! Too many obsticles in life to contend with, to say one person would make a difference (other than the annoyance factor) is ridiculous! I love the rest of the cast, hands down! Awsome dialogue between characters! Do you find this valuable?

Rita has transformed into an outspoken woman, wife and mother of three. She has changed and the irony is that she did it with Dexter! Last nights' episode sewed it up for Dexter as far as his family is concerned, he wants them. Rita has brought a lot to the show allowing Dexter to change too, a lot slower but none the less he has changed.

Rita is a part of Dexter's life and this show is about his life, all of it, not just his nightly hunts.

Dexter lives with it, so can all of the Rita haters.
