Contrarian Corner: This guy does not like Dexter
Feb 21 2010, 5:31 PM EST
Hey everyone. I happened upon this blog post by some dude online, and this guy REALLY does not like Dexter. He spends most the blog talking about how horrible different things from the show are. Being an avid fan as I am, I of course have to disagree with almost everything he says. That being said... I've got to admit that some things he says in this I cannot help but agree with. Please take a look: http://moronosphere.com/2009/12/what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-dexter.php Now I don't understand why he seems to have such a vehement hatred towards Lauren Velez. That just seems misplaced. But two or three things he mentioned in this "article" had me agreeing. Something that really stuck out for me was, "...it's clear Dexter's now a serial killer in name only; he's now just a weird dude who talks to himself, and has a hobby of vigilantism". I've said similar things about Dexter this past season. He doesn't seem like a serial killer anymore. Like, I don't believe that he's just killing for fun (which of course was a part of the initial appeal of the series). Whenever he kills now, it's always out of an obligation to cover-up his own tracks, or that maybe he does it just cause he has some free time. Other things this guy pointed out were that I thought interesting were: Dexter being dumbed down and making stupid decisions if only to further the plot along, the sort of ridiculousness of Dexter studying Trinity's skills at pretending to be normal despite that fact that Dexter was already comfortably in the midst of a perfect "regular guy" disguise, and "Ghost Harry" is kind of a stupid, overused device now. So what do you guys think? Was everything this guy said total crap? Are you like me and are you able to find some kernels of truth hidden among this guy's hate? Is there series only getting better as it continues? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Well, at least he placed his opinions on a site called Moronosphere. It's curious to think that he says the show doesn't deliver, but rather that it gives off the aura of one that does. If he was talking about Stephanie Meyers' Twilight series I would say, BRAVO! That is clearly an example of someone who utilized an already beaten-to-death formula of eternal love + vampires to attract dopey teens, desperate for their own fairytale. Oddly his view on the direction Dexter has been going is shared by myself. The difference being I have optimism for Dexter's future. It does seem that the producers wanted the show more palletible for audiences who require such things as morals and values in their programming. That bothers me the same way it bothers this guy. Dexter was plenty likable as he was. There was no need for this domestication or the doubts he faced with normalcy. If Dexter gets back to his old slicing self, then his world is saved. The majority of the concerns Mr. Moronosphere had with this season stem from Rita's nonsense that I remember swearing at the television over, myself. He's careful to point out that the virus was planted in Season 3. This guy actually cares about the Dexter show. Don't take it the wrong way. He has a lot of valid points. With Rita gone and the children likely to be filed away by the first episode or 2, this could be a brave new beginning for our hero. I don't agree with Mr. M that Quinn is a more interesting character. I think he's in need of being "re-purposed as fish food" as Dexter would say. Mr. M says, "I want to watch it. I want it to be good." He's objective, to the point, spot on about the bad elements in the show and maybe only wrong about a few lesser important aspects. All in all, I think all Dexter fans should read this post by Mr. Moronosphere. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Wow that guy was long-winded. I think he was bang on with most of his points. Everything he said about Dexter and the unnecessary plot twists on the show were very true.Dexter is no longer the character that he should have been. They took the serial killer out of him and left a domesticated vigilante just as he said. In my opinion you don't just "get over" being a serial killer. Dexter just can't decide one day that he doesn't really need or want it. It is an overwhelming and mind controlling addiction and if people do their research on real serial killers you will find these people live in their own fantasy world and don't relate to others except as toys or pawns in their fantasy lives. Where I tend to disagree with the dude is that I find the show very enjoyable and entertaining and I am more forgiving towards the writers than he is. That being said I do find the show and the Dexter character have gone off the rails and need to come back to a more realistic and dark path. I think character progression and development is great but in my opinion it has gone in the wrong direction and I think the writers have realised that and are going to be bringing Dexter back towards where he should be - a vigilate serial killer. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I think Rita's death is the first sign of a better Dexter to come. He can breathe in freedom and breathe out the Dark Passenger again. Do you find this valuable? |

Being an avid fan as I am, I of course have to disagree with almost everything he says. That being said... I've got to admit that some things he says in this I cannot help but agree with. Please take a look:The blogger in my opinion had some valid opinions on the show. However, Many of his comments I disagree with as well. I happen to share his view on Lauren Velez who plays Lt. Maria LaGuerta. I too agree that she is a terrible actress. Her acting is forced and phony. By contrast, Her co-actor David Zayas who plays Angel Batista, is very good, and should be given a more prominent role other than LaGuerta's fall guy. I think the sub-plot about their romance and marriage is stupid, and a waste of David Zayas's talent. I agree with him about John Lithgow, who did a wonderful job with the creepy roll of "The Trinity Killer". I agree that MCH plays Dexter brilliantly, and would be a likeable guy in any role he plays. I disagree about Julie Benz, who played her role admirably as Rita Morgan. Many have been irritated by her complaining or whining, but that is what the script called for,and she invoked the feelings in us that she was supposed to. Kudos to Julie! He had some good points about the series from seasons one to four. By the way he is a fan, and is just disappointed with the direction of the show. Maybe they went a little too far with Dexter the hen pecked husband, but, I give the writers credit for trying a new direction and trying to make the Dexter character more well rounded and diverse. That keeps the character from becoming too one dimensional, and the show too predictable. I think, that's why they gave us surprises and cliff hangers in season four to keep the audience guessing, and it worked! All in all, I do think the blog is worth fans taking a look at. I believe the series got better as it progressed from one to four, and I expect season five to be even better! Do you find this valuable? |
