Thoughts about "That Night, a Forest Grew"

This episode was a great step in the right direction. There was a very gratuitous sex scene in the beginning, and a not as graphic, but equally needless, sex scene further in the episode, but those aside, this episode made me happy. I was thrilled Lila's true colors were shown, and even MORE thrilled Dexter made the comment about feeling "clean" when he's with Rita and the kids. You go Dex! You know where you belong!

One of my favorite parts of the episode was when Deb caught Dexter in bed. What she said to him essentially captured what I wished I could've said to him. I liked Deb and Lundy kissing. It was good for them.

Oh, and wasn't the show down with Doakes intense? I wonder how that will pan out in the long run. I know Doakes is a real jerk, but I really like his character. I hope they don't kill him off or anything, however I can't imagine Doakes just dropping his whole obsession with Dexter any other way! I hope the writers know what they're doing.

I'm a little skeptical of Lundy thinking the Butcher is one of the cops because they still have five episodes left and I don't know how much closer they can get to Dexter without catching him, but they have five weeks to do it! However, the fact that they are getting that much closer to him is definitely going to keep me coming back for more next week (as if I wasn't going to already!).

Overall, it was a good episode for me. Anyone else think so? Any nay-sayers? Showtime's description of next week's episode gets me excited cause it looks like the old Dexter may be coming back in some form.

ps- Could someone explain the significance of the light bulb at the end? I know they commented on it earlier in the episode, but I didn't catch it all the way. Whatever it was, I think Dexter's starting to wise uip to Lla's psychotic behavior.

Zizzy, I just love your insights. You write exactly what I'm thinking.

We are starting to see Lila as an obsessive pyromaniac that may eventually drive Dexter AWAY if she keeps sabatoging herself to get his attention.

SOOO happy him and Rita were civil. How SWEET was it to see Dexter hang up on Lila during Cody's speech. Ah, there's hope enough for him and Rita to make a comeback.

I'm sad that Dexter hasn't killed much this season. I like the old Dexter.

My favorite scene was when Deb kissed Lundy. There was something so subtly romantic and comforting about it. Deb is really doing some soul searching and blossoming.

Yes, overall it was a good episode. I don't know how to explain the light bulb thing, but I hope that a "light bulb" goes off in Dexter's head and he'll start re-thinking his relationship with her.

I'd also be happy if Rita got more screen time than Lila's breasts. Come on!

I'm glad you enjoy my insights. I think a lot of people share our opinions about the show, but as of right now, there aren't too many people on this wiki to express them, however I am noticing a major increase in the traffic as of late.

And also, I laughed out loud about your Lila's breast comments. As a young man, I admit they peaked my interest the first time they made an appearance back in episode five, but now they're all over the place! It's ridiculous! Get those things out of my face!

I wonder if Rita's mom is gone for real or not? I think the IMDB page will let me know. I'ma go check it out.

The lightbulb has to be a sign that he's beginning to see Lila is a psycho and willing to go to extreme measures to get what she wants.

I give it 2 episodes before she's wrapped in cellophane. My bet is that she's killed more than one ex-boyfriend that's tried to dump her.

Good call, but as a friend pointed out, Dex will be a suspect, which will put strain on Deb and Lundy's relationship.

Oh, I get it. He was commenting on how good she was a t manipulating people to get what she wants, and perhaps he wasn't fully aware of the irony of him saying that in that particular situation.

As for your prediction for how long she has to live, I'm going out on a limb that she's going to be around till the very last episode, seeing as how its called "The British Invasion", however I wouldn't be completely opposed to her being wrapped in cellophane five seconds into the next episode.

Lila bores me. I'm far from a prude but the sex scenes are pointless and I just fast forward through them, or go watch some real porn.

I like the direction the main story is going in but the whole stupid romance stuff annoys me and detracts from the interesting main plot. It's like how Hill Street Blues had a tiny little bit of character development in the beginning but the main story was about cops doing cop work but by the end of the series it was a total bore-fest because there was virtually no cop drama and only bs love drama. They turned a great cop drama into a chick flick.

Don't ruin Dexter with the boring pointless side stuff, stick to the main story, it's good enough to not need any silly parsley on top. Remember Lost was supposed to be done by now but they screwed us and made us watch stupid episodes with Cheech.

Please won't someone in America give us a chance! We're all superstars! <- See how that Howard Stern reference made no sense and added nothing to my post? Lila served her purpose, she needs to go now or she needs to kill the other chick. Psycho chicks annoy me.

Any ideas about the title of this episode? They're usually pretty straight forward, but I'm not getting this one.

I LOVE watching Dexter and Lila, but the handwriting is already on the wall - she's destined for the Gulf Stream with Chino.

Dex was so cute with Cody - from a technical standpoint, the character is a little too fond of them for a heartless killer, but it's entertaining.

The thing with Doakes is getting really intense, really fast. Is it possible they'll kill Doakes off?

This title is yet another literary reference, Angel. Childrens literature: Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. What it's specifically in reference to is a chaotic scene to me. I'm not sure if it's about a nightmare or a dream. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Deb was listening to Chopin's Nocture in E flat major (one of his more popular works.) It's a beautiful piece. I'll post the name of the jazz piece too. It's on the tip of my tongue I just have to recall the name.

The only reference to the title that I could pick up was in the beginning when Dexter speaks of his family tree (forest...) and how Doakes is started to uncover all of the branches....but Dexter's past didn't actually surface too much in this episode.

I don't think they'll kill Doakes off, he's too good of a character. But Dexter really had some cajones to head butt Doakes like that. WOW!

Great comment. I too bore of their sex scenes. And I totally agree that Lila needs to be seen wearing clothes more often than not. The show is turning into a campy soap opera, which makes me yawn. Perhaps I am being a little too critical, though. I am so fiercely defensive of Rita that I tend to always slam Lila, but truth is, I never thought the Dex and Lila love scenes were all that exciting. They seem forced....

I want to guess it was Miles Davis.

I expected we would delve into Doakes military background a little more to pull together his encounter with his old Ranger buddy a few episodes ago. However, short of Dex, and Harry to an extent, the writers haven't dug very deep into any of the characters' pasts.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I think Doakes is here to stay.

Yes you are correct. The jazz tune is "So What" by Miles Davis.
