Romancing a serial killer
Nov 16 2007, 10:13 PM EST I think it's a mistake to romanticize the relationship between Rita and Dexter too much. He really doesn't feel anything but rage. Part of the attraction to Lila is that he can express his rage sexually. He won't ever be able to do that with Rita. While it does seem that he's developing some kind of feelings for Rita and the kids, and they're playing that up (probably too much), the one thing Lila might accomplish, in what I expect to be her very short time on the show, is that he does start to have some feelings other than rage. They can't make it too syrupy, though, or they lose the realism of the character completely. And he'll have to make a lot of mistakes. You don't just get feelings all of a sudden and know what to do with them. There's a very real problem that the writers should address, though, which is that Dexter took on his facade of normalcy because that's how Harry taught him to survive. Now that Harry is no longer the saint he once was in Dexter's eyes, his code is less likely to work as a method of sublimating his anger. Rita was just supposed to be part of the image, and he picked her because she was so damaged that he thought she'd never notice his problems. Where does he put his rage if he's not killing and not with Lila? What happens if Rita gets strong enough to demand more? He's going to have to go back to killing or he's a danger to everyone. Is he going to be content with his lifestyle after he re-evaluates the code? What if he doesn't want or need to seem normal? What if he can't go back to the almost asexual relationship with Rita? What happens to Rita if she finds out the truth about him? One good thing is that Lila might have put Rita off the idea of NA for Dexter for completely. She'll probably want to keep him to herself. 5 out of 12 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Romancing a serial killer
Nov 16 2007, 10:43 PM EST These are very good points. I have wondered some of thses myelf, about the need for Normal if Rita is gone and the need for Rita. Especially the too much syrup. Writers can do this. What has Lila let out of the cage? Gail was forcing or kept forcing some issues. Now that Rita has sent Gail away will things go back to normal? I think they might if Dexter realizes Lila was a bad person. Nah! that will not happen! Will it? Dexter has found some feelings - I think he is smart enoughto put it all it perspective. The kids are imprtant to him as well as Rita. If Gail is gone then he may find all he needs at Rita's address. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Romancing a serial killer
Nov 18 2007, 11:15 PM EST I don't agree that Dex' relationship with Rita is or ever has been "asexual." In the beginning, she wasn't ready to make a sexual commitment as she was still dealing with getting over Paul. Dex wasn't ready to make the sexual commitment because he was threated by how showing feelings or lack of them in the wrong arena, could possibly "out" him as being abnormal. In the end, they both found that in fact they have a satisfactory relationship - both in and out of bed. Even though she doesn't have the same passion for him that she did for Paul (as she hinted to Deb a couple of epis ago). I think that there is more to Rita than we've seen so far. Not a dark side ala Lila, but something about Rita's mother is EVIL! Her mother alone, makes me know there is more to Rita and her past than we've gotten to know so far. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Romancing a serial killer
Nov 18 2007, 11:25 PM EST The idea that Dex's relationship with Rita is somewhat asexual comes from this site. That's how she's described. If you remember, Dexter said that he always loses women when he has sex with them because they sense something is wrong with him. I think he's sexually very dark, and I don't see that being expressed with Rita. The one advantage Rita has for Dex is that she doesn't question him too much. Lila is way too in his face for him to function. The kids will naturally draw Dex and Rita back together, and Dexter will want that because it's his comfort zone. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Nov 25 2007, 10:58 PM EST "That took all of about 10 seconds for Rita to take Dex back. Everybody happy now? "I'm happy. Rita is perfect for him. He "gets off" in murder. Her gift to him is normal. He appreciates it. And he loves the kids. That's the real connection. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nov 25 2007, 11:01 PM EST He really does seem to love those kids. Maybe because he never got to be a kid. Cody reminds him of the self he never got to be. Lila's hot but she's too crazy. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Romancing a serial killer
Nov 26 2007, 12:22 PM EST I've got a pretty good idea. She's going to drug Angel, set Rita's house on fire and use Angel as her alibi. Either that or go after Dex. I think Rita will be the target, though. Do you find this valuable? |

Nov 26 2007, 7:06 PM EST Ok, cool. Let me ask you this - How will Rita view Dexter if Lila, the person he brought into their lives, tries to kill her and the kids? Even if he saves them, she could be pretty angry with him. 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |
